Campus Ministry hosts events celebrating Martin Luther King

The Offices of Student Life, Student Activities, and Campus Ministry are hosting a variety of events planned for Saturday through Tuesday, Jan. 17-20, in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Jan. 17

Day of Service: “Living Faith and Seeking Justice.” In commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Saint Mary’s student Volunteer Mentors will participatie in a service day in collaboration with the Catholic Worker communities of Winona and Lake City.

Jan. 18

Sunday Eucharist: “Here I Am, Lord: Martin Luther King and Prophetic Christian Witness,” 10:30 a.m. and 9 p.m., Saint Thomas More Chapel. Using the scriptures offered by the Church for this day—the call of Samuel and the call of the first disciples—the community will reflect on the life of the man who became America’s most well-known Christian prophet and martyr because of his work as the mouthpiece of a movement rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Jan. 19

Audio Recording: “The Drum Major Instinct,” noon, Toner Student Center dining room. Given on Feb. 4, 1968, “The Drum Major Instinct” was one of the last sermons ever given by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. before his tragic death on April 4. He warned and encouraged a congregation about the real work of social justice and Christian living: service. An audio recording of a slightly abridged version of the sermon will be played in the dining room during lunch.
Film: “Fruitvale Station,” 9 p.m., Salvi Lecture Hall. This is a critically acclaimed and award-winning 2013 film based on the true story of a fateful encounter between a young black man and a public transit police officer on the BART in San Francisco in the early hours of New Years Day, 2009.

Jan. 20

Panel: “#BlackLivesMatter: The Unfinished Business of the Civil Rights Movement,” 7 p.m., Toner Student Center lounge. Tragic events across the country have ignited a news-making series of protests and demonstrations concerning relations between law enforcement officers and the African American community, especially young black men. Saint Mary's University’s annual celebration of the unparalleled legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. provides the perfect moment for students, faculty, staff and community members to discuss the meaning and trajectory of “#BlackLivesMatter” and its relationship to work of the civil rights movement.

Prayer: “Walk With Me: Night Prayer of Lamentation and Hope,” 8:45 p.m., President’s Room, Toner Student Center. Structured within the ancient Christian tradition of Compline (night prayer), the Saint Mary’s community will gather blending psalms, scripture, gospel music and the words of Dr. King to express both sorrow for the unfinished work of racial equality in America and hope that Christ continues to light the way toward a more just society.

Lasallian Week of Peace concludes today

Today is the last day of events for Lasallian Week of Peace. The theme of this year’s Lasallian Week of Peace is “Responsibility, Rehabilitation and Restoration: Crime and Criminal Justice.“ The Saint Mary’s community is invited.

‘Make a Difference Day’ and ‘Lasallian Day of Service’ are Oct. 25

In recognition of national “Make a Difference Day,” Saint Mary’s Volunteer Mentors group is inviting Winona residents and nonprofit agencies to submit requests for service.

The university hopes to get as many students as possible out into the community between 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. Students are willing to help individuals and organizations with anything from painting to yard work.

Saint Mary’s will supply the workers, if you supply the materials needed (paint, brushes, rakes, tools, etc.).

“Make a Difference Day” is a national day of helping others, a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Created by USA WEEKEND magazine, this annual event takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. For more information, call Anna Waechter at Ext. 7268 or email awaechte@smumn.edu.

Lasallian Day of Service

Also on Oct. 25, alumni are invited to participate in the sixth-annual Lasallian Day of Service. This is a day that allows alumni to come together in the spirit of the Lasallian mission in service to others.
The alumni association has established a volunteer site for the Winona area at a Winona Habitat for Humanity house.

Sites have also been confirmed in the Chicago, Twin Cities, Saint Louis, Milwaukee and Denver, Colo., areas. Alumni who reside outside these locations have been encouraged to arrange their own service project(s).

Saint Mary’s remembers Sept. 11

In remembrance of the 13th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, a ceremony was held on campus. Members of the Saint Mary’s community gathered around the Peace Pole in remembrance and in prayer.

100 students to volunteer in Winona community Sunday

Nearly 100 new students from Saint Mary’s  will serve four organizations at numerous sites throughout the Winona area on Sunday, Aug. 31, from 1 to 4 p.m. as part of New Student Volunteer Day.

Students will be assisting a number of organizations including Winona County, the Catholic Worker House, the Winona Area Humane Society, and Kinstone Academy of Applied Permaculture.

New Student Volunteer Day—organized through the Office of Campus Ministry—is dedicated to providing new Saint Mary’s students with the opportunity to engage with the Winona community, and to be inspired by the Lasallian spirit of service early in their college careers.

Saint Mary’s to host Row, Ride, Run Triathlon

The annual Saint Mary’s University “Row, Ride, Run Triathlon” will take place on Saturday, April 26, beginning at 9 a.m. at Lake Lodge in Winona and finishing on Saint Mary’s Winona campus. About 150 athletes from throughout the Midwest are expected to register for the race.

Participants will canoe or kayak a 2.5-mile loop around Lake Winona, then bike 14 miles from Lake Winona to the SMU campus. Once on campus, racers will run 3.1 miles through the bluffs surrounding the university.

Proceeds assist Serving Others United in Love (SOUL), a collaborative program between a student organization and Saint Mary’s Office of Campus Ministry. Through SOUL, students are able to connect with diverse communities by participating in national and international service trips.

Registration is $35 per individual or $70 per team. Teams can be made up of two, three or four members. The deadline to register was Sunday, April 20, and racers must provide their own canoes or kayaks.

Awards will be presented to the top three fastest individuals and the top finishing teams.
Participants must be 10 or older to row or run and 15 or older to bike.

Big, Little Pals go ice fishing

The Saint Mary’s Big and Little Pals Club went on a field trip to the Ike’s Family Fishing Derby on Feb. 22. Big and Little Pals is a long standing example of how Lasallian values are lived out in genuine community engagement. SMU students bundled up to ensure wax worms remained on hooks and area youth enjoyed themselves. Fish were not caught, but many good times were the catch of the day.

Patronal Feast Mass is Monday

The Patronal Feast Mass is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at Saint Thomas More Chapel.

Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is Dec. 12

The public is invited to join in the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Thursday, Dec. 12. Eucharist begins at 12:10 p.m. in Saint Thomas More Chapel. A simple Mass will be celebrated in both English and Spanish, including traditional music and an opportunity to reverence an original image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. All are welcome.

Campus Ministry hosts outdoor retreat

Twelve people attended the Outdoor Retreat Sept. 20-21, facilitated by Campus Ministry.  The retreat focused on enjoying the outdoors and discovering how a spiritual life may be called to environmental stewardship.  Participants hiked, canoed and camped at Perrot State Park.

120 SMU students to volunteer in Winona community Saturday

About 120 students from Saint Mary’s — a mixture of athletes and new students — will serve six organizations in Winona on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of New Student Volunteer Day.

Throughout the day, about 80 students will be painting the main room of the Winona Friendship Center, located at Main and 5th streets. The Friendship Center received a “Picture-It-Painted” grant from Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation, in partnership with Valspar Corporation, and Saint Mary’s students will help bring some much-needed color to their space. The room — after 41 gallons of paint — will go from off-white to a rich green with brown accents. The Saint Mary’s Volunteer Mentors and Campus Ministry are collaborating with the Friendship Center and organizers of the event.
