Chamber Singers to perform in the Twin Cities, California

The Chamber Singers will perform in Minneapolis and Columbia Heights, Minn., and in California as part of their 2014 concert tour.

The 26-voice select ensemble is directed by Dr. Patrick O’Shea. Tour performances will include the following liturgies and concerts:

• Basilica of Saint Mary, Minneapolis, Saturday, March 1, Mass 5 p.m.
• Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Columbia Heights, Minn., Sunday, March 2, Mass 10 a.m., concert 3 p.m.
• San Antonio Winery, Los Angeles, Tuesday, March 4, 7 p.m. (alumni event)
• Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, El Cajon, Calif., Wednesday, March 5, Vespers 7 p.m.
• St. Joseph Cathedral, San Diego, Calif., Saturday, March 8, Mass 5:15 p.m.
• Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, El Cajon, Calif., Sunday, March 9, Mass 11 a.m., Concert 1:30 p.m.
All concerts are free and open to the public and guests are, of course, welcome at the various liturgies. Repertoire will include a cappella works by Howells, Brahms, Arcadelt, Alice Parker and Moses Hogan.

Upon their return, the Chamber Singers will present a free “Homecoming Concert” at the Chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels, 7th and Vila streets, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13.

The Singers to premiere work by Dr. O’Shea

The Twin Cities-based critically acclaimed choral ensemble “The Singers” will perform in Winona as part of its 10th anniversary legacy tour.

The performance is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, at Chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels, 1155 W. Wabasha St.

Under the direction of Matthew Culloton, the group will perform music by Morten Lauridsen and Benjamin Britten, as well as beloved American folk songs and spirituals.

The choir will combine with the Saint Mary’s Chamber Singers on two pieces, including the world premiere of a new work, “Nocte fletuum angelis” by Saint Mary’s music faculty member Dr. Patrick O’Shea, which commemorates the lives lost in the tragic school shooting in Connecticut.

The concert is free and is funded, in part, by Minnesota arts and cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the Legacy Amendment vote of the people of Minnesota on Nov. 4, 2008.

Saint Mary’s Chamber Singers to perform in France

The Chamber Singers will perform in Reims, France, as part of their 2013 Concert Tour.

The 24-voice select ensemble is directed by Dr. Patrick M. O’Shea, associate professor of music.

Tour performances will include the following liturgies and concerts:

• Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona
   March 2, Mass 5:15 p.m.
• Pensionnat de Sacre-Coeur, Reims, France
   March 6, Visit/Workshop, 8 to 11 a.m.
• Lycée Saint-Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, Reims
   March 6, Concert 6 p.m.
• Cathédrale de Notre Dame de Reims
   March 10, Mass 11 a.m.

All concerts are free and open to the public, and guests are, of course, welcome at the various liturgies. Repertoire will include a cappella works by Byrd, Tallis, Hindemith, Stephen Chatman, Abbie Betinis and Stephen Paulus. The concerts will feature the premiere performances of “Tre Madrigali Amorosi,” three settings of poems by the Neapolitan Renaissance poet Torquato Tasso (1544-1595) by Dr. O’Shea.  These works feature special guest soloist and SMU faculty member Chun Chim (David) Leung, violin.

Upon their return, the Chamber Singers will present a free “Homecoming Concert” at the Chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels, 7th and Vila streets, Winona, on Thursday, March 14, at 7:30 p.m.

Chamber Singers to perform at MMEA Midwinter Clinic

The Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Patrick O’Shea, will perform today, Friday, Feb. 17, for the Midwinter Clinic of the Minnesota Music Educators Association. The Chamber Singers were the only choral group invited to perform at this year’s conference, and will present a 40-minute program at 5:15 p.m. at Central Lutheran Church, 333 South 12th Street, Minneapolis.

The MMEA performance presents a “preview” of repertoire that the Chamber Singers will perform on their upcoming concert tour, March 2-11.

A highlight of the tour included the performance of two new compositions — by SMU Music faculty Patrick O’Shea and Eric Heukeshoven — at St. Peter’s Basilica Friday, March 11. Before departure, the Chamber Singers will sing as the guest choir for Mass at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, at Holy Name Cathedral, Chicago. Upon their return, they will present a free “Homecoming Concert” in Winona at the Chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels, 7th and Vila streets, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17.
