Chat, Chow & Web 2.0

The next Chat, Show & Web 2.0, hosted by the Fitzgerald Library, Information Technology, and Instructional Technology, will be held noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6. Meet in the main lounge of the McEnery Center. Lunch will be provided and RSVPs are appreciated to jspartz@smumn.edu.

The title of the presentation will be “Just Flip It, Flip It.” Weary of your sage on the stage role? Struggling to keep wired students engaged? Maybe you’re ready to flip the classroom.  Dr. Janelle Schultz and Dr. Kristen Selke from the Mathematics Department have done just that, and they will describe their experiment in this session and provide you with ideas for flipping your classes. 

Bearbower to attend ECAR Symposium

Sarah Bearbower, Information Technology manager-academic systems, will attend the ECAR symposium on “IT as a Game Changer.”

This year’s ECAR Symposium, to be held July 28–29 in Chicago, will provide opportunities for CIOs and their campus innovation partners to interact with one another and some of the most innovative and stimulating strategists working in higher education today. Together they will explore how information technology can be used, not simply to run campus operations efficiently, but to actually transform teaching, learning, research, and higher education administration.

GoogleApps user’s group collaboration session

Are you an SMU GoogleApps Email or Calendar user? Would you like to meet with other SMU GoogleApps users? Are you curious about GoogleApps and wonder if you’d like to join the piloting group?

Join Information Technology for a GoogleApps user’s group collaboration session, where GoogleApps users are encouraged to share their experiences. Share a short success story or ask a question. (ie: favorite feature, how has it allowed you to do some task better, urgent flags, etc)

Bring your lunch and collaborate with other SMU GoogleApps users on Wednesday, June 29, from noon to 1 p.m.

Winona campus users meet in Hendrickson Center 23, and Twin Cities campus users meet in LaSalle Hall 210.

There will be no formal presentation. There are a limited number of computers in Hendrickson Center 23 available if participants would like to follow along on your account. Additionally, Wifi access is available in both Hendrickson Center 23 or LaSalle Hall 210 if you’d like to bring your own browser enabled mobile device (laptop, iOS device, tablet, etc). This is your opportunity to share with others your experience with GoogleApps, and possibly pick up some tips, and tricks.

IT Department hosts EDUCAUSE Conference

At the beginning of November, the Information Technology Department hosted a viewing room for the 2009 EDUCAUSE Conference - Online Edition.

This year’s conference was the first in which Educause offered the online option. In an effort to keep abreast of what is going on in the industry, and with emphasis placed on stretching the university dollar, Information Technology registered for the event and invited members of the Winona campus to participate.

Twelve members of the university participated in a combination of 15 sessions offered over the three-day period.

We are aware of a number of university members who were interested in attending the session but could not, due to prior commitments. As a follow up for those still interested in reviewing the content or possibly seeing it for the first time, conference materials (including presentation recordings) can be viewed at www.educause.edu/Resources/Browse/EDUCAUSE09/35198#tabs--2.

Each session has a “Resources and Video” tab through which participants can view or listen to the conference proceedings.
