Boxes and Walls event tears down stereotypes

On Thursday, Feb. 7, Saint Mary’s hosted the first ever Boxes and Walls event, an interactive diversity program sponsored by the Office of Residence Life and the Wellness Center.

The program can best be described as a ‘haunted house’ type experience.  Instead of encountering ghosts and goblins, each participant was led on a tour through four rooms where they were faced with various areas of diversity and oppression. The goal of the program was to educate on stereotypes while thinking outside the box in order to tear down the walls that life perspectives might have us in.

This year, there were four rooms. The first room offered different activities on a range of physical and learning disabilities, including maneuvering a wheelchair, reading paragraphs simulating dyslexia, and hands-on instruction in using a walking stick to get around campus from Kelsi Watters, current first-year student.  A second room offered a star activity simulating the coming out process and acceptance levels one might encounter. The third room offered a first-hand experience in being a non-native language learner in the classroom. The fourth room brought awareness to the differing financial backgrounds of our student population.

Over 100 students went through the four rooms, and the event concluded with a brief conversation about the experience.  Volunteers included 10 professional staff members and over 25 student volunteers as actors and tour guides.  Thank you to all who volunteered their time and energy in creating this program. Look forward to the event again next year.

Depression significantly affects a person’s appetite, sleep, energy, thinking, self-esteem and physical well-being. The symptoms are persistent and not the same as a temporary blue mood or normal emotional experiences such as sadness or grief. Depression can have severe consequences in terms of suffering and disability.

Substance-free support group to begin in February

A number of alcohol-related incidents have occurred among the college student population in our region over the course of this academic year. Unfortunately, alcohol and drug abuse continue to impact our students’ lives despite continued efforts to reduce the harm that accompanies such abuse. Saint Mary’s has a new alcohol, drug, and tobacco policy that was introduced in August, 2007. This has helped to clarify the institution’s position on these issues and made enforcement of policies more effective. Training of university staff has helped increase levels of consistency regarding policy implementation and students have begun to realize that we are taking dangerous and belligerent abuse of substances more seriously.

Initiatives started this year include the use of a BreathScan. This can be used by underage students who have been documented in the presence of alcohol to prove that they did not drink, thereby avoiding any judicial consequences.

Our continued focus at Saint Mary’s is to reduce risks associated with alcohol and drug consumption primarily through education and support for students struggling with these issues. With this goal in mind, a new partnership has formed between Winona State University and Saint Mary’s counseling services to offer a supportive peer group aimed at students who want to stop using alcohol and drugs.

Please refer students interested in getting support for these issues to Dr. Michael O’Friel, AOD education coordinator and Counselor at Ext. 1773 (office), Ext. 6692 (direct), or e-mail: mofriel@smumn.edu
