Chamber Orchestra to perform Feb. 15


The Saint Mary’s Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. David Leung, will perform “Heart Wounds. Last Spring” 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, in Figliulo Recital Hall.

The concert will feature a returning guest-artist, professor Maureen Yuen from State University of New York at Fredonia. She and Dr. Leung performed at Central Lutheran Church last year, and Saint Mary’s is excited to welcome her back to Winona to perform more works by Bach. She will be the featured soloist in Bach’s immortal “E Major Concerto for Solo Violin and Orchestra.”

In light of Valentine’s Day weekend, the Chamber Orchestra will offer two elegiac melodies by Romantic Norwegian composer Edvarg Grieg; Corelli's soulful concerto grosso for two solo violins, solo cello and orchestra; and the heart-breaking “Silouans Song” by mystical Estonian Arvo Part.

Chamber Orchestra events


The Saint Mary’s Chamber Orchestra went to Callista Court last weekend and performed “The Magical French Horn” concert program with Tammy Bartz on horn, Dr. Kyle Black (Modern and Classical Languages), and Dr. David Leung on violin. A formal concert was held Sunday in Figliulo Recital Hall.

Saint Mary’s Chamber Orchestra concert is Sunday


The Saint Mary’s University Chamber Orchestra will perform “The Magical French Horn” 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in Figliulo Recital Hall of the Performance Center.

Under the direction of Dr. David Leung, the orchestra will perform works by Felix Mendelssohn and contemporary Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. The event features Saint Mary’s faculty member Tammy Bartz on French horn playing Joseph Haydn’s beautiful “Concerto No. 1 in D.”  Dr. Leung will play Antonio Vivaldi's “Autumn” concerto from the Four Seasons, with Dr. Kyle Black of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages narrating the Italian and English sonnets.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors and are available online at www.pagetheatre.org or at the Saint Mary’s Box Office, 507-457-1715 Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The orchestra will also perform for the residents of Callista Court at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Chamber Orchestra concert is Sunday



The Saint Mary’s University Chamber Orchestra will perform a concert titled “Mastery & Majesty” 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, in Figliulo Recital Hall.

The orchestra, under the direction of Dr. David Leung, will perform music by Philip Glass, Georg Philipp Telemann, Antonio Vivaldi and Joseph Haydn.

Special guests include Dr. Jason Sah, professor of Juan N. Corpus University, Bogota, Colombia, on viola; and Dr. Kyle Black, assistant professor of modern and classical languages at Saint Mary’s, with a sonnet recitation.

SMU presents free concert featuring Baroque music


The Department of Music will present “The Cuckoo and the Nightingale and other Baroque Spectaculars” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at Central Lutheran Church, 259 W. Wabasha St.

The event, free and open to the public, will feature the Saint Mary’s Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. David Leung. The concert will include music by Handel, Bach and Corelli.

Special guests joining Dr. Leung on violin will be Maureen Yuen, a violinist from State University of New York at Fredonia, and Erik Floan, an organist from Saint Mary’s University.

Chamber Orchestra to perform Dec. 8


The Saint Mary’s University Chamber Orchestra will perform a special birthday tribute concert, “Britten’s Centennial,” at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Figliulo Recital Hall.

The English composer Benjamin Britten was born on Nov. 22, 1913. In celebration of this centenary, this concert will include two of his most famous works, “Simple Symphony for Strings” and “Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings.”

The orchestra is composed of Saint Mary’s students and faculty, along with Winona community members, under the direction of Dr. David Leung. The concert will feature the talents of Dr. Mark Mowry, a tenor from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire; and Regina Barbosa, a senior public relations major, on French horn.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors and are available at the SMU Box Office, Ext. 1715, Monday through Friday from 10 am. to 6 p.m. or online at www.pagetheatre.org.

SMU Chamber Orchestra to perform April 28

The Saint Mary’s University Chamber Orchestra will perform “A Bach Family Festival” at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 28, in Figliulo Recital Hall.

This free public performance will include works by J.C. Bach, W.F. Bach, C.P.E. Bach and J.S. Bach including:

• “Overture to Temistocle”
• “Adagio and Fugue”
• “Symphony in F, H. 665”
• “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G, BWV 1048;”
• “Orchestral Suite in B minor, BWV 1067” (featuring a solo by SMU’s Dr. Janet Heukeshoven, on flute); and
• “Keyboard Concerto in D minor, BWV 1032” (featuring a solo by Norman Lee, guest artist from Hong Kong).

The SMU Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Patrick O’Shea, will collaborate with the Chamber Orchestra on “This is the Record of John” by Gibbons/E. Heukeshoven during their spring concert on Saturday, April 27.

Chamber Orchestra performs for Winona seniors


The SMU Chamber Orchestra made its third visit to the Sugar Loaf Senior Living facility. A spring concert titled, “An afternoon with Bach,” featuring music by J.S. and W. F. Bach, was presented April 20.

Chamber Orchestra returns to Sugar Loaf Senior Living

Dr. David Leung and the SMU Chamber Orchestra will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at the Sugar Loaf Senior Living facility on Mankato Ave. Their second performance at Sugar Loaf Senior Living will be called “Mozart’s Serenade,” and they will be playing Serenata Notturna, K. 239.

Chamber Orchestra to perform Dec. 9


The Chamber Orchestra will perform the “Sounds of Christmas”  7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at Figliulo Recital Hall.

The orchestra is under the direction of Dr. David Leung.

The recital will feature Baroque masterpieces that are most appropriate for the Advent season including  “Christmas Concerto” by Corelli and Vivaldi’s “Winter” from his ever-popular “Four Seasons.” The breathtaking “O Magnum Mysterium” by Lauridsen, the light-hearted “Sleigh Ride” by Mozart, and the humorous “Farewell” symphony by Haydn will round out the holiday performance. A special guest, Dr. Kyle Black from the Modern and Classical Languages Department, will recite inspiring sonnets in various languages between compositions.

The concert is free and open to the public.
