MCA to host free workshop with TU Dance Company

TU Dance company members will teach a modern-based dance class prior to their 7:30 p.m. performance Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Saint Mary’s University’s Page Theatre.

The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts is hosting a workshop with the professional dancers from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Valéncia Arts Center, 1164 W. 10th St.

Founded in 2004 by Toni Pierce-Sands and Uri Sands in Saint Paul, TU Dance is a leading voice for contemporary dance. The 12-member, professional company is acclaimed for its diverse and versatile artists, performing work that draws together modern dance, classical ballet, African-based and urban vernacular movements.

Intermediate and advanced dancers are invited to register and participate free of charge. The workshop will start with a warmup and then build into more complex dance phrases, allowing the dancer’s body to experience the movements as it uses the space. Students may even have the opportunity to learn choreography from the repertory that will be performed that night.

MCA announces auditions for Summer Dance Intensive

The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts Summer Dance Intensive offers comprehensive dance training for intermediate and advanced dancers ages 11 to 22.  Auditions are required for acceptance. Boarding and non-boarding camp options are available.

Summer Dance Intensive students participate in approximately eight hours of technique and theory classes each day, as well as a final showcase performance. The auditions will include a full ballet class. Students with pointe experience should bring pointe shoes to the audition class. Following the ballet class, students may choose to show a prepared jazz, modern, tap, or character dance center combination of at least 64 counts or 16 bars. Showing a prepared piece is optional.

MCA announces Jan. 17 auditions for dance concert

Auditions for “AbunDANCE: A Woman’s Influence,” the 2015 Dance Repertory Company spring concert, will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Valéncia Arts Center, 1164 W. 10th St.

The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts’ Dance Repertory Company will present its annual spring dance concert April 16-18 at Page Theatre. Roles for male and female intermediate and advanced dancers in tap, jazz, hip hop, modern, contemporary ballet, and Irish dance are available for youth ages 12 and older through adults.

Dancers should bring a current photo and appropriate audition shoes for their choice of dance style. Students under the age of 21 who are cast are required to be enrolled in at least one dance class at MCA, Saint Mary’s, or Winona State. A $75 performance fee is required.

This spring’s production will focus on women’s contributions to the world of dance and feature a variety of dance forms.

Dance Repertory Company presents ‘The Nutcracker’

The Department of Theatre and Dance and the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts (MCA) will present the Dance Repertory Company in “The Nutcracker” today through Sunday, Dec. 5-7, at the Saint Mary’s Page Theatre.

Heralding the message of peace on earth, “The Nutcracker” is performed around the globe during the holiday season. Producing this delightful ballet every other holiday season, the Dance Repertory Company once again brings this magical experience to the Winona area community for its eighth biennial production.

The 2014 cast includes over 80 members including students from Saint Mary’s, Winona State University, and children and community members from the Winona and surrounding areas.

Through this ballet the beauty of the pure, young heart shines bright in a world of dancing dolls, angels, and of course, the wonderful magical Nutcracker Prince.  In the dreams of a child named Clara, a battle wages between a band of mice and company of toy soldiers. With Clara’s assistance, the toy soldiers are victorious and grateful. A Nutcracker Prince welcomes her to the Land of Snow, where they dance with the angels, and to the Kingdom of the Sweets hosted by the Sugar Plum Fairy where she sees a beautiful array of ethnic dances such as Spanish Coffee, Chinese Tea, and Russian Baba.

“The Nutcracker” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. today, Friday, Dec. 5, through Saturday, Dec. 6, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens.

This year’s Sugar Plum Fairy Tea Party will feature two tea sittings (1 and 4 p.m.). Specialty teas and exquisite finger foods will be served. Additionally, the Land of the Sweets Gift Boutique, featuring holiday gifts and crafts, is available to the public from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for children and $18 for adults.  All children attending the tea party will receive a complimentary photo with their favorite character from the “Nutcracker” ballet. Tea attendees will enjoy the sounds of live cello by MCA’s music division instructor, Rachael Ryan Dahlgren, and a dance demonstration by the Sugar Plum Fairy.

For four decades, the Dance Repertory Company (DRC) has delighted the Winona community with quality dance productions featuring local dancers in classical and contemporary works. The DRC is the pre-professional performance group of the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts. Company members participate in rehearsals, technique classes and stage performances.
 
The production will feature pieces from numerous genres of dance including hip hop, modern, jazz, tap, ballet, and pointe. Performed by the dancers who currently train at the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts, Saint Mary’s University, and Winona State University, the 40th anniversary celebration concert showcases their effervescent spirit, vibrant energy, and technical and artistic abilities that continue to inspire audiences year after year. On Friday, April 25, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and during intermission of the production, a silent auction of a commemorative quilt, created by Lori McCarrick Vietor, an alum parent, will be offered.

Featuring past production T-shirts designs, as well as the current 40th commemorative design, this quilt represents the past, present, and future of the school.

This quilt will be displayed at the Page Theatre during the production and 15 percent of the proceeds will benefit the MCA Scholarship Fund, so come on out and bid. (Cash or check only please and a reserve price will be set prior to the start of bidding.)

Students will enjoy four to six classes per day including technique, theory, repertoire, and rehearsals for the final showcase. All classes and rehearsals are housed in the Valéncia Arts Center. Students participate in technique and theory courses as well as a final showcase performance.

The performance showcase will be Saturday, July 26, at 7 p.m. in the Blackbox Theatre at the Valéncia Arts Center, 1164 West 10th St.

40th anniversary of DRC

Save the date for a spring concert April 25-26 celebrating the 40th year of dance at the Dance Repertory Company of the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts.

The events are planned for 7:30 p.m. April 25 and 3 p.m. April 26 at Page Theatre.

A reunion reception will be held following the April 25 performance, from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. Free breakfast and tours will be offered at the Valéncia Arts Center the morning of April 26. Reconnect with fellow dancers and alumni. A free adult and children’s dance workshop will be held the morning of April 26 at Valéncia Arts Center. Commemorative pieces and memorabilia will be sold to benefit the scholarship fund.

Dance Repertory Company to present fall dance recital

The Dance Repertory Company II, the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts’ youth performing ensemble, will present its fall dance recital 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6, and 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Valéncia Arts Center Academy Theatre, 1164 W. 10th St.

In addition to classes, a large portion of the learning experience for all MCA students is performing. Come support these talented students and choreographers. Dance forms included are tap, jazz, hip hop, and ballet with the second half of the concert highlighting the upper-level students. River North Dance Chicago takes the stage Nov. 20

Celebrated for creating vital connections between dancer and audience as well as presenting gutsy and entertaining repertoire, River North Dance Chicago will combine athletic prowess and artistic perspective with bold, theatrical flair during its show Wednesday, Nov. 20.

The Page Series presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Page Theatre.

Under the artistic direction of Frank Chaves, River North Dance Chicago demonstrates depth and sophistication with a commitment to creating an accessible, enriching experience for audiences. Chaves aims for audiences to feel the complete spectrum of human emotions in a single evening. He wants them to leave feeling joyful and exhilarated at the end of each program.

Founded in 1989, the company is recognized as one of Chicago’s leading dance companies, receiving critical acclaim both on a national and international level. The dancers will present a mixed repertoire including “Simply Miles,” featuring the music of Miles Davis, and “SUPER STRAIGHT is Coming Down,” as well as other pieces from their 20-year repertoire.

River North Dance Chicago takes the stage Nov. 20

Celebrated for creating vital connections between dancer and audience as well as presenting gutsy and entertaining repertoire, River North Dance Chicago will combine athletic prowess and artistic perspective with bold, theatrical flair during their show Wednesday, Nov. 20.

The Page Series presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Page Theatre.

Under the artistic direction of Frank Chaves, River North Dance Chicago demonstrates depth and sophistication with a commitment to creating an accessible, enriching experience for audiences. Chaves aims for audiences to feel the complete spectrum of human emotions in a single evening. He wants them to leave feeling joyful and exhilarated at the end of each program.

Founded in 1989, the company is recognized as one of Chicago’s leading dance companies, receiving critical acclaim both on a national and international level. The dancers will present a mixed repertoire including “Simply Miles,” featuring the music of Miles Davis, and “SUPER STRAIGHT is Coming Down,” as well as other pieces from their 20-year repertoire.
