‘Make a Difference Day’ and ‘Lasallian Day of Service’




Make a Difference Day

In recognition of national “Make a Difference Day,” 108 Saint Mary’s students served 47 Winona residences on Oct. 25. As part of these efforts, the women’s hockey team assisted with a Red Cross smoke alarm installation. Teams of students, Winona firemen, and Red Cross and community volunteers installed 100 alarms and changed many batteries and canvassed 390 homes.

Lasallian Day of Service

Also on Oct. 25 around 100 alumni participated in the sixth-annual Lasallian Day of Service. This is a day that allows alumni to come together in the spirit of the Lasallian mission in service to others. Winona students, staff and alumni volunteered at the current Habitat for Humanity house.

Volunteer sites were set up in the Chicago, Twin Cities, Saint Louis, Milwaukee and Denver areas.

In recognition of national “Make a Difference Day,” Saint Mary’s Volunteer Mentors group is inviting Winona residents and nonprofit agencies to submit requests for service.

The university hopes to get as many students as possible out into the community between 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. Students are willing to help individuals and organizations with anything from painting to yard work.

Saint Mary’s will supply the workers, if you supply the materials needed (paint, brushes, rakes, tools, etc.).

“Make a Difference Day” is a national day of helping others, a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Created by USA WEEKEND magazine, this annual event takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. For more information, call Anna Waechter at Ext. 7268 or email awaechte@smumn.edu.

Lasallian Day of Service sends alumni into their communities

Saint Mary's University alumni across the country participated in the fifth annual Lasallian Day of Service on Oct. 26. Sponsored by the Alumni Association, this was a day for alums to come together in the spirit of the Lasallian mission in service to others.

In Winona, a group of alums and staff helped clear out and organize the basement of the CSTea House on the campus of the former College of Saint Teresa. The historic building is home to the CST Alumnae Association. In the Twin Cities, alums and staff helped at five locations, including food package preparation at the Second Harvest and Feed My Starving Children food shelves.

Other alumni service sites were active in the Chicago, Saint Louis and Denver areas, and Milwaukee is this weekend. In all, over 200 alums and friends participated, a 100 percent increase from 2012.

Also on Oct. 26, alumni are invited to participate in the fifth annual Lasallian Day of Service. This is a day that allows alumni to come together in the spirit of the Lasallian mission in service to others. 

The alumni association has established a volunteer site for the Winona area at the CSTea House, 357 Gould St.

The CSTea House is the home of the College of Saint Teresa Alumnae Association. It is located next to Lourdes Hall and adjacent to the Chapel of the Angels and the Alverna Center. Fifteen volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to organize and clean the basement.

Sites have also been confirmed in the Chicago, Twin Cities, Saint Louis and Denver, Colo., areas. Alumni who reside outside these locations have been encouraged to arrange their own service project(s).  A record number of 200 alumni volunteers have already registered.

Oct. 27 is Lasallian Day of Service, Make a Difference Day


Lasallian Day of Service, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27, is a day that allows SMU alumni to come together in the spirit of the Lasallian mission of service to others.

This year volunteer opportunities have been arranged in Chicago; the Twin Cities; Winona; Kansas City, Missouri; and in Denver, Colo.

Alumni are encouraged to organize their own service projects with fellow Saint Mary’s classmates and friends who reside in geographic areas outside these five locations.

In Winona, volunteers will work with Habitat for Humanity from 9 a.m. to noon doing construction and painting.

Oct. 27 is Lasallian Day of Service, Make a Difference Day


La Sallian Day of Service, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27, is a day that allows SMU alumni to come together in the spirit of the Lasallian mission of service to others.

This year volunteer opportunities have been arranged in Chicago; the Twin Cities; Winona; Kansas City, Missouri; and in Denver, Colo.

Alumni are encouraged to organize their own service projects with fellow Saint Mary’s classmates and friends who reside in geographic areas outside these five locations.

Saint Mary’s students, staff, alumni volunteer in community

In recognition of national “Make a Difference Day” and “Lasallian Day of Service,” about 300 Saint Mary’s students, alumni and staff volunteered their time Saturday, Oct. 22, throughout Winona — as well as in Chicago and the Twin Cities areas.

About 160 SMU student volunteers assisted locally at the Habitat Restore, Habitat for Humanity, Winona Health, the Salvation Army, the Winona Area Humane Society, area churches and schools, as well as residences — 38 locations in all.

“Make a Difference Day” is the most encompassing national day of helping others, a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Created by USA WEEKEND magazine, this annual event takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October.

Saint Mary’s alumni also came together in service to others Oct. 22 as part of the annual “Lasallian Day of Service.” Alumni helped out in the Twin Cities, Chicago and Winona, working with projects such as Feed My Starving Children and Arc’s Value Village in the Twin Cities; Feed My Starving Children, St. Procopius School and a San Miguel School in Chicago; and Habitat for Humanity in Winona.

‘Make a Difference Day,’ Lasallian Day of Service is Oct. 22

Saint Mary’s students will be out volunteering in the community for ‘Make a Difference Day’ between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Oct. 22, through the Office of Campus Ministry.

Students will be building for Habitat for Humanity, working at area churches and Community Memorial Hospital, and volunteering with many other organizations in town.

Also on Oct. 22, Saint Mary’s alumni in Twin Cities, Chicago, Winona and all over the country are organizing volunteer sites in their local communities for the third annual Lasallian Day of Service.

All area alumni and friends are invited to participate in the Winona-area Lasallian Day of Service (from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) with Habitat for Humanity. Volunteers will assist in the construction of a new Habitat Home in the Winona area. Alumni will be volunteering with current SMU students.

Nearly 300 students volunteer for Make a Difference Day


In recognition of national “Make a Difference Day,” approximately 285 Saint Mary’s students volunteered their time Saturday, Oct. 23, throughout Winona and the surrounding area.

Volunteers assisted the Habitat Restore, Habitat for Humanity, the Winona Area Humane Society, Winona Health, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, Grace Place, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Winona ORC, and at Madison, Jefferson and Washington-Kosciusko Elementary Schools.
