Saint Mary's students present at the Capitol

Five students headed to the Minnesota State Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday, April 8, to present the results of their independent research and creative scholarship at the annual Minnesota Private College Scholars at the Capitol event.

The Minnesota Private College Council hosts this event to publicize and celebrate the achievements of just a few of the thousands of students who attend 15 private schools of higher learning in Minnesota, and to share research that may have long-term implications for Minnesotans.

This event showcased current research projects completed by more than 40 undergraduate scholars from Minnesota private colleges and universities. Saint Mary’s students attending this year’s event included:

• Amy Spitzmueller — “Heavy Metal Analysis of Bluegill (Lepomis macrochius) from East Lake Winona”
• Ryan Diak, Amanda Lindholm, Danielle Pues and Rim Woldeslassie — “From Cradle to Grave: Does Mortality Salience Facilitate a Preference for Our Own Attachment Styles?”

Student researchers to present at Scholars at the Capitol

Three students from Saint Mary’s, along with their faculty advisors, will head to the Minnesota State Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday, Feb. 22, to present the results of their independent research and creative scholarship at the annual Minnesota Private College Scholars at the Capitol event.

The Minnesota Private College Council hosts this event in an attempt to publicize and celebrate the achievements of just a few of the many thousands of students who attend private schools of higher learning in Minnesota, and to share research that may have long-term implications for Minnesotans.

This event will showcase current research projects completed by approximately 40 undergraduate scholars from Minnesota private colleges and universities. Saint Mary’s students attending this year’s event include:

• Grace Christensen and Paige Jensen, presenting on “The Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Glycerol Monolaurate on TPA-Induced Inflammation in Mus Musculus.” Their faculty advisor is Dr. Jeanne Minnerath.

• Alex Braun, presenting on “The Effects of Atrazine on BMP4 Protein Levels in Liver and Serum Isolated From Phasianus Colchisus and Gallus Gallus.” Her faculty advisor is Dr. Debra Martin.

The Minnesota Private College Council represents 17 respected liberal arts colleges and universities with 60,000 students. These institutions award 30 percent of the baccalaureate degrees in the state.

Students from Saint Mary’s are invited to travel to Saint Paul Thursday, March 31, for Minnesota Private College Day at the Capitol. This annual event provides an opportunity for Minnesota private college students to see first-hand how state government works.

The Minnesota Private College Council hosts this event in an attempt to publicize and celebrate the achievements of just a few of the many thousands of students who attend 14 private schools of higher learning in Minnesota, and to share research that may have long-term implications for Minnesotans.

This event — to be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — will showcase current research projects completed by 37 undergraduate scholars from Minnesota private colleges and universities. Saint Mary’s students attending this year’s event include:

• Jennifer Koezly, Ham Lake, Minn., presenting “Iron Oxide/Nanoparticle Arrays as Multimodal Imaging Agents.” Her faculty advisor is Dr. Paul Nienaber. This work stems from a summer undergraduate research experience conducted with Dr. Valerie Pierre of the chemistry department at the University of Minnesota.

• Stephanie Valentine, Omaha, Neb., presenting “Just Truss Me: Geometric Recognizers.” Her faculty advisor is Dr. Ann Smith. Valentine will introduce Mekanix, a sketch recognition system that can recognize, correct and provide feedback on a student’s hand-drawn truss diagram in real-time.

SMU participates in MPCC blog

The MPCC LearnMoreMN blog is up and running. Learnmore is an initiative to inspire and foster new solutions to ensure that more Minnesota children succeed in school and move on to college.

Learnmore began in 2005 as an effort initiated by the Minnesota Private College Council, and it is the result of an informal alliance of more than 100 individuals representing business, education, service groups and others who are concerned about our state’s future.

100 students tour campus for MPCC week

Saint Mary's is one of 17 private schools participating in Minnesota Private College week June 21-25. Saint Mary’s has hosted about 100 students and their families for tours of campus and meetings with admission counselors this week.

MPCC Day at the Capitol is March 24

Minnesota is facing a significant budget challenge during the 2010 legislative session. Recent forecasts show that the Minnesota State Grant program will experience a $42 million loss by the end of June 2011. Thousands of students will lose their grants and those who keep them will see the value shrink by an estimated 18.5 percent. These economic realities impact how our students pay for college.

One of the biggest ways that students and campus communities can have a major impact on supporting Minnesota State Grant program is to participate in the Minnesota Private College Council’s Day at the Capitol. This day provides students and employees the opportunity to come to the Capitol and tell the legislators and the governor how important the Minnesota State Grant program is to you, your school, and the state.

Saint Mary’s Day at the Capitol is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24. Register online for Day at the Capitol at www.mnprivatecolleges.org/events/day.php. Click on “Register.” The deadline to register is Monday, March 22.

This event — to be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — will showcase current research projects completed by 34 undergraduate scholars from Minnesota private colleges and universities. Saint Mary’s students attending this year’s event include:

• Ryan Soukoup, Sleepy Eye, Minn., presenting on “Cultural Change and the Dakota Uprising.” One of his faculty advisors is Dr. Elizabeth Throop.

• Keith Fahrforth, Warrenville, Ill., and Michelle Hermes, Roseville, Minn., presenting on “The Effects of Atrazine on Pack Cell Volume, Gender and Development of Gallus Gallus.” Their faculty advisor is Dr. Debra Martin.
