The La Crosse Chamber Chorale will feature the talents of three Saint Mary’s music faculty in their upcoming “Prayers and Visions” concerts on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Concerts are 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31 and 3 p.m. Feb. 1. Set in the beautiful Mary of the Angels Chapel in the St. Rose Convent (901 Franciscan Way, La Crosse), the concert will include compositions by Dr. Patrick O’Shea and A. Eric Heukeshoven as well as performances by violinist Dr. David Leung.
O’Shea’s “Nocte fletuum angelis” (Night of the Weeping of Angels) was composed in memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. The work was jointly premiered by The Singers and the Saint Mary’s Chamber Singers in February 2014.
Heukeshoven’s “Preghiera Semplice” (Simple Prayer) was commissioned for the Saint Mary’s Chamber Singers’ 2012 tour to Italy. The work is based on “The Prayer of Saint Francis” (“O Lord, make me an instrument of your peace …”) and received its premiere in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Dr. David Leung will be the featured guest artist in performances of Jacob Avshalomov’s setting of the Rune of Hospitality, “I Saw a Stranger Yestere’en” and in “Pietà” by Reed Criddle, inspired by Michelangelo’s famous sculpture.

Members of the Saint Mary’s Music Department faculty will present a free recital on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m. in Figliulo Recital Hall.
This performance features Dr. David Leung (violin) and Derek Clark (cello) performing a duet by Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly; 18th century arias performed by Lindsy O’Shea (soprano); a rare performance of a galant-style flute sonata by Anna Bon performed by Dr. Janet Heukeshoven; solo jazz piano works performed by Eric Heukeshoven; and a Canonic Sonata by Telemann played by David Leung and Janet Heukeshoven. Pianist Aleah Harvey will be performing with Heukeshoven and O’Shea.

“Exaltation Triptych,” a new three-movement work commissioned for the Winona Brass Band’s 20th anniversary season will be premiered Sunday, May 11, in the St. Cecilia Theater (Cotter Schools) at 2 p.m.
The new music, composed by assistant professor of music A. Eric Heukeshoven, is based on three traditional hymn-tunes. Dr. Richard Lindner will lead the brass band as they celebrate 20 years of music making in Winona.

“Here’s That Rainy Day” for flute choir, arranged by assistant professor of music A. Eric Heukeshoven, will receive its premiere as part of the Upper Midwest Flute Association’s FluteFest 2014 on Saturday, April 12, at Augsburg College. Heukeshoven was commissioned to create an arrangement of the well-known jazz standard as part of the daylong celebration featuring guest flutist Jim Walker. Walker has been described as a dynamic soloist, legendary orchestral, and studio musician, celebrated jazz flutist, and an inspiration to countless students worldwide.
Janet Heukeshoven will lead the Upper Midwest Flute Association Flute Orchestra in performance at Saturday’s FluteFest. The Flute Orchestra is made up of 25 professional flutists including musicians from the Minnesota Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, college/university flute faculty members and studio flute teachers. Dr. John Paulson, music faculty emeritus will perform in the orchestra.
Janet Heukeshoven will direct two of Walker’s arrangements, plus other selections by Handel, Eric Heukeshoven and Fauré. The Flute Orchestra includes flutes from the smallest (piccolo) to the largest (contra-bass flute) instruments of the flute family.
The performance will be held in the campus chapel at 3:30 p.m., and the public is invited to attend.
Saint Mary’s had a big presence at the Minnesota Music Educators Conference Feb. 13 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

The Faculty Development Committee has rescheduled the mini-grant luncheon presentations by Dr. Janet Heukeshoven and Lisa Truax for Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Toner Student Center faculty dining room.
Faculty are invited to hear Dr. Heukeshoven talk about the Alexander Method, an approach to health, wellness and better living for all people, especially embraced in the arts. Musicians’ health and wellness is a major initiative by NASM (National Assoc. of School of Music), which is required by our accreditation. Diane Foust (certified Alexander practitioner) is also working with SMU music students to provide an introduction to body awareness and mapping, preventing and correcting common problems related to body alignment, proper use and function to both heal and prevent injuries common to musicians.
Lisa Truax will talk about a mini-grant the Department of Art and Design received to develop materials and examples for both the planned summer Animation Camp and the new Interactive Multimedia and Web Design 2 courses. Faculty developed two demonstration animations, one using Adobe Flash and another using stop motion photography as well as a step by step handout in beginning to intermediate level Flash animations.
The Saint Thomas Trio Chamber Music Concert will be held 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, in Figliulo Recital Hall. The event, sponsored by the Department of Music, will feature Winona State University musicians Dr. Woobin Kim on piano and Dr. Dan Sheridan on clarinet, along with Dr. David Leung from Saint Mary’s on viola. The performance is free and open to the public and will include music by Mozart, Schumann and Bruch.
The former and current directors of jazz studies will travel to Havana, Cuba, along with a delegation of musicians, composers and educators to interact with the contemporary Cuban music scene.
Dr. John Paulson, professor emeritus, and A. Eric Heukeshoven, assistant professor of music, will join a group sponsored by the American Composers Forum from Dec. 15-22 for a one-week research program to Cuba. The trip marks the first time a group of this type will be allowed to study with renowned Cuban musicians. Of special interest to the two SMU professors will be full access to the Havana International Jazz Festival.
During the intensive weeklong visit, the delegates will attend concerts, workshops, open rehearsals, and networking events, as well as tour Havana to enjoy its rich cultural history.

SMU Department of Music faculty Dr. Ned Kirk and Dr. David Leung will present a faculty duo recital at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10.
Dr. Kirk, on piano, and Dr. Leung, on violin, will present Schubert’s “Rondo Brilliant in B minor,” Beethoven’s “Violin Sonata No. 7 in C minor; “Diamond’s “Canticle and Perpetual Motion,” and Franck’s “Violin Sonata in A major.”
The event, free and open to the public, will be held in Figliulo Recital Hall.

The National Association of Schools of Music Commission on Accreditation, at its June 2013 meetings, voted to continue SMU in good standing. The next NASM accreditation visit will be in 2020-2021. In addition to all of SMU’s curricular programs receiving approval, the Minnesota Conservatory of the Arts achieved approval for listing as well. Congratulations to everyone who was involved with this reaccreditation process.
