SMU volunteers to participate in ‘Spruce Up Winona’ April 12


The Saint Mary’s Volunteer Mentors are encouraging Winona nonprofit agencies to submit requests for service.

Saint Mary’s student volunteers will be available from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, to help local individuals, groups, churches and organizations in recognition of the ninth annual “Spruce Up Winona Day.”

Do you need someone to help with your spring cleaning, to rake leaves, to do some painting, or to help with construction? Saint Mary’s University student volunteers will be available to volunteer from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, to help local individuals, groups, churches and organizations in recognition of “Spruce Up Winona Day.”

Saint Mary’s will supply the workers, if you supply the materials needed (paint, brushes, rakes, tools, etc.).  Requests must be made by Tuesday, April 16, to Chris McClead at Ext. 7268 or cmcclead@smumn.edu.

160 students participate in ‘Spruce Up Winona Day’

In recognition of “Spruce Up Winona Day,” about 160 students helped out throughout the community on April 21. The group assisted the Habitat ReStore, Winona Area Humane Society, Winona Public Library, Winona Health, as well as several area churches and senior residences.

117 students volunteer for ‘Spruce Up Winona Day’

In recognition of “Spruce Up Winona Day,” Saint Mary’s Volunteer Mentors organized 117 students to volunteer within the Winona community Thursday, April 14. The volunteers assisted at 16 non-profit organizations and 41 residences. Spruce Up Winona Day involves Winona State, Minnesota State College-Southeast Tech and SMU as an annual community-wide cleanup effort.

In recognition of “Spruce Up Winona Day,” Saint Mary’s Volunteer Services organized a group of student volunteers to help out Winona non-profit agencies. Workers helped with spring cleaning, yard work and a variety of other tasks. Approximately 175 Saint Mary’s students teamed up from 1 to 5 p.m.

Saint Mary’s planning for next ‘Spruce up Winona Day’

In recognition of “Spruce Up Winona Day,” Saint Mary’s is hoping to send 125 faculty, staff and students into the community between 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 23, to help groups and organizations.

To sign up for a 1 to 3 p.m., 3 to 5 p.m., or 1 to 5 p.m. shift, call Katie LaPlant at Ext. 6936 or e-mail volunteerservices@smumn.edu. Saint Mary’s employees may volunteer up to two hours of work time for Spruce Up Winona and the Gilmore Creek cleanup. Any volunteer time must be approved by the employee’s appropriate supervisor.
