Congratulations to Dr. Tammy Vondrasek, assistant director of financial aid and adjunct professor in the Business Department, upon completion of her doctoral work. Her dissertation is titled: “A Phenomenological Study of Maternal Influence on the Leadership Development of Women Presidents at Institutions of Higher Learning.” She received her Doctor of Education in Leadership degree on Jan. 18 in the commencement ceremony on the Twin Cities campus.
Matthew (Development and Alumni Relations) and Layla Lunde (adjunct Music Department) had a daughter, Anna Madeline Lunde, on Dec. 29, 2014. The Saint Mary’s community extends its congratulations to the Lunde family.
Mary Sweeney, mother of Joe Sweeney, Development, died Sunday, Jan. 20. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today, Friday, Jan. 25, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Farley, Iowa. Mary was the mother and mother-in-law of Joe ’81 (Stacey Sanborn ’82) Sweeney, Patricia (Sweeney ’94) and Tom Battis ’94, and grandmother of Kevin Sweeney ’10. The Saint Mary’s community extends its sympathy to the Sweeney family.

The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team is joining with team alumnus Ryan Wockenfus ’11 in a fundraising effort to help fight spina bifida.
On May 19, Wockenfus, a current member of the SMU Admission staff in Winona, will be participating in the upcoming “Tough Mudder,” a 10-12 mile obstacle course designed by British Special Forces to test athletes’ all-around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie.
The grueling event will take place in Somerset, Wis., and Wockenfus — whose younger sister, Kaley, was born with spina bifida in 1991 — will be a part of “Team Spina Bifida.”
“This is our chance to support my younger sister, along with all other individuals and families who have been affected by spina bifida,” said Wockenfus, a four-year member of both the SMU men’s basketball and track and field teams.
While Wockenfus will be tackling the “Tough Mudder” — and its underground mud tunnels, fire, ice-water, 12-foot walls and 10,000 volts of electricity — the Cardinal men’s basketball team will be doing its part during their Saturday, Feb. 4, game against Macalester, beginning at 3 p.m.
The Cardinals will be soliciting pledges based on the Cardinals’ performance against the Scots in the “hustle areas” — offensive rebounds, assists, steals and drawing offensive fouls. (For example, if you pledge 10 cents, and the Cardinals total 11 offensive rebounds, 12 assists and four steals, you would donate $2.70.)

Ken McCullough, director of the PASS program, and Leilani Oas, SMU graphic design major, collaborated on a framed poster of a poem written by McCullough, dedicated to the citizens of Misato, Japan — Winona’s sister city. The poster hangs in the Misato Room of Winona’s City Hall. McCullough selected Oas’ design from among others submitted as a class project for Brother Rod Robertson’s typography class. Oas was a PSEO student at the time.
Brother Michael Collins, FSC ’59, M’65, Ed.D., a current and long-time Saint Mary’s University trustee, died from cancer on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012.
Visitation will be Friday from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. (with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.) at DeLaSalle High School. The funeral Mass will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis (with visitation one hour before Mass). A reception at DeLaSalle High School will follow the Mass.
On Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, Jane Ochrymowycz, former director of the Academic Skills Center, passed away after a lengthy illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 12, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 4537 Third Ave. S., Minneapolis. Visitation is one hour prior to service. A luncheon will immediately follow. A bus has been chartered from Winona for the service. Departure will be at 8 a.m. Park at Main and Belleview streets. Terrie Lueck, director of Conferencing and Camps, has been elected and has agreed to serve as Director-Elect - Region 5 for 2012-2013 for the Association of Collegiate Conference and Events Directors-International. This organization consists of more than 1,500 campus professionals who design, market, coordinate and plan conferences and special events on the campuses of colleges and universities around the world. Since 1980, ACCED-I has increased the visibility and enhanced the stature of the collegiate conference and events profession.
There are 11 regions. Region 5 includes Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Saskatchewan.
Lueck will represent Region 5 at the Annual Conference to be held in Denver, Colo., in March 2012.

Just in time for Halloween, Kirstin “Fluffy” Blake (Performance Center production manager) and her husband Justin Vann are offering a special tuition-free workshop for middle and high school students titled, “Wicked Halloween Special Effects Make-Up Workshops” at the Winona Arts Center. Participants can learn and practice techniques to turn themselves and their friends into disgusting zombies, awesome animals, terrifying monsters or anything else!
On Oct. 15, middle school students are welcome at 10 a.m., and high school students at 2 p.m. Only 20 spots are available for each workshop session. All materials will be provided; bring a clean face and an old shirt.
