Faculty, staff art now on display


“Saint Mary’s Creates,” an exhibition of creative works by the university faculty and staff, is now on display in the Lillian Davis Hogan Gallery. The exhibit is free and open to the public daily.

All members of the Winona Campus staff, faculty, and administration were invited to submit their creative endeavors for this exhibition.

The creative works include painting, drawing, photography, writing, quilts and fiber arts, sculpture and mixed media, and more.

MCA offers drawing workshops for youth


The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts Visual Arts Division invites students in grades 4-7 to participate in drawing workshops from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 9, March 9, and April 13.

Drawing is a great skill for students to learn observation, memory, and dexterity. Young artists will explore still-life imaginative works, portraiture, and Japanese brush painting during these once-a-month workshops with local artist Julie Johnston.

New students are welcome, and those who have participated previously will be challenged with new themes and works. The price for all three workshops is $35 and includes all supplies.

Brother Rod’s photo featured in Minneapolis exhibit



A photograph by Brother Roderick Robertson is featured in an exhibit at the Minneapolis Photo Center. The center is featuring two new exhibits using cell phone cameras: “Mobile Photo,” a juried exhibit; as well as “A Small Amount of Courage” by Karen Divine. The opening for the exhibit will be 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, May 16. “Mobile Photo” is an 84-print exhibit that includes works from an international assortment of photographers. All-campus student work on display in art galleries


The All-Campus Undergraduate Art Exhibition is on display in the Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries.

This juried exhibition is always highly anticipated by both students and faculty, as entry is open to all students, not just art and design majors. This year there are more than 75 entries from students majoring in human services, computer science, education, music industry, literature, theatre arts, Spanish, biology, chemistry, English, entrepreneurship, criminal justice, psychology, art studio, business, graphic design and environmental biology.

Bluff Country art tour features work by May, Hulsing

Monta May ’04, Office of Marketing and Communication, is one of the featured artists in the Bluff Country Studio Art Tour, Friday through Sunday, April 26-28. Visit her at 854 W. 5th St.

May’s art features an exploration of the ancient and the contemporary. Visitors to her studio will see mosaics, ceramics, sculptures, drawings and paintings done by May and her daughter, Emerald Hulsing ’09. May will be doing mosaic-making demonstrations all day, each day of the tour.

The Bluff Country Studio Art Tour is held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Senior art work on display through May 11


“Defining,” the SMU senior art show, will be on display through May 11 in the Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries.

Students displaying work include Brianna Bloomquist, Jamie Cooper, Jennifer Daniels, Tommy Holme, De’Shanda Morley, Lisa-Marie Nihart, Amanda Rahman, Yuchen Ren, Jamie Stefely and Caroline Stringer.

The galleries — free and open to the public — are open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Truax exhibiting in three shows

The artwork of Lisa Truax (Art and Design Department) is currently being exhibited in two group exhibitions and one solo exhibition. The solo exhibition, titled “Subsumed Remnants,” at the University of Wisconsin Parkside in Kenosha, is being held in the Fine Art Galleries, and runs Jan. 22 through     March 7. The opening is Feb. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Her work is also part of two group exhibitions, the Orton Cone Box Show, which is an international juried traveling show that will be at NCECA (the National Conference for Education in Ceramic Art) in Houston, Texas, starting on March 19. The specific NCECA exhibition venue is to be announced. The first location of the Cone Box Show exhibit was at Sept. 14 through Oct. 31 at the Lawrence, Kansas Art Center.

The second group show, “Two by Two, an international juried show, is at Eastern Washington University from Jan. 24 through March 14 at the EWU Gallery of Art.

The 2012 All-Campus Student Art Exhibit will feature senior art exhibitions by Nikki Farmer and Marie Fidler. The galleries — free and open to the public — will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Undergraduate art show winners announced



The 2012 Undergraduate Art Show opened Nov. 17. At the opening, prizes were awarded  to students for outstanding work. The following students won awards:

First Prize: Diana Hernandez, English with Writing Emphasis major, “Still Life in Ink,” ink drawing

Second Prize: Molly Duggan, Studio Art major, “The Snake Charmer,” oil on canvas

Third Prize: Abigail Osborne, Studio Art major, “Golden Braid,” linoleum print

Honorable Mention: Tran Nguyen, Graphic Design major, “Value Study,” charcoal

Honorable Mention: Brianna Blomquist, Graphic Design major, “The Forsaken Call,” ceramic

Lawing displays new work at galleries through Nov. 4


Preston Lawing, SMU Art and Design faculty member, is displaying new work during the current Saint Mary’s art exhibit.

In “Cabinets of Curiosities,” Lawing is showing sculptures, prints, drawings and an installation/recreation of a “hoarder’s” apartment.

The show will run through Nov. 4 at the Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries, located in the Toner Student Center. The galleries will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and all exhibits are free and open to the public.

Lasallian artwork installed in Benilde Hall


Prints of Saint John Baptist De La Salle and Christian Brother Saint Benilde were framed and hung in the lounge of Benilde Hall, along with some biographical information about each person and their significance to Saint Mary’s.

Brother Lawrence Humphrey also came to Benilde and gave a talk to some of the residents about Benilde, De La Salle, and the tradition of the Brothers.
