MCA announces summer programming
The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts will offer summer programming June 14-Aug. 26. Community classes, lessons, workshops and camps are offered for children age 3 through adults and include:
Private Music Lessons: Voice, Clarinet, and Saxophone
• Arranged, for students entering grades 5 to 12
• Tuition: $75 for 5 lessons, $140 for 10 lessons
Teen/Adult Dance and Fitness Classes
• Class offerings will include: Tour of Dance, Power Piyo, Clogging I, and Clogging II
• June 14, 21, 28 and July 5, 12, 19; tuition varies
Clogging For Kids
• June 14, 21, 28 and July 5, 12, 19, 4:15-5 p.m.; tuition: $40
• An Introduction to clogging for students ages 8-12
Pre-Intensive Dance Workshops
• Ballet/pointe, classical variation, modern, jazz and repertory for intermediate and advanced dancers
• June 14-18, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; tuition: $180
Dance Day Camp I – Dance Me a Story
• June 21-25, 9-11:30 a.m., for ages 5-8; tuition: $100
• Students will participate in ballet, creative movement, jazz, and perform in a final showcase
Dance Day Camp II - Dance the Day Away
• June 21-25, 1-4:30 p.m., for ages 8-12; tuition: $150
• Students will participate in ballet, jazz, modern, choreography, theory courses, and perform in a final showcase
Theatre Day Camp I – Far-out Fairy Tales
• June 28-July 1, 9-11:30 a.m. for children ages 7-10; tuition: $100
• Students will participate in theatre games, acting, musical theatre, and perform in a final showcase
Theatre Day Camp II – Character Quest
• June 28-June 30 from 1-4:30 p.m. and July 1 from 9-11:30 a.m., for youth ages 10-13; tuition: $150
• Students will learn about group improvisation, masks, acting, musical theatre, and perform in a final showcase
Creative Movement
• July 6, 8, 13, 15, 5:15 – 5:45 p.m., for children ages 3-4; tuition: $30
• Introduction to the dance class setting using creative movement techniques
Musical Theatre Dance
• July 6, 8, 13, 15, 6-7 p.m., for youth age 13 through adults; tuition: $40
• Students will learn basic dance technique for musical theatre performance and explore choreography from Broadway musicals
Music Explorers I
• July 12-16, 4:15-5 p.m., for students entering grades kindergarten through 3; tuition: $30
• Learn concepts related to steady beat, duration, pitch, volume, articulation, solfege, and rhythmic and melodic improvisation
Music Explorers II
• July 12-16, 3-4 p.m., for students entering grades 4 through 6; tuition: $30
• Students will learn to write their own melodies that include elements of rhythm and meter, pitch and key, expression, and form.
Free Boys and Men’s Dance Workshops
• July 19- 22, for ages 8-21, 11-11:45 a.m. for beginners, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for those with experience
• Study with visiting guest artists Allen Fields and Jeffrey Peterson
• These workshops are offered free to all male students through a grant from the Sewell Family Foundation
Nutcracker Pre-Audition Workshops
• Aug. 25-26, for children age 5 through adults; tuition varies
• Workshops offer an ideal experience for younger students to become familiar with the audition setting, before the Sept. 1 “Nutcracker” auditions, and offer more advanced student the opportunity to have technique classes at the end of summer, prior to auditions.
MCA summer dance and fitness classes also offer excellent opportunities for adults. All adult classes are held during the evenings. Additionally, workshops for intermediate and advanced teens and college aged students are available.
All MCA classes, workshops, lessons, and camps are held at the Valéncia Arts Center, 1164 West 10th St. Tuition for summer classes varies depending on class length and level. The Boys and Men’s Dance Workshops are offered tuition free to all male students ages 8-21 through a grant from the Sewell Family Foundation.
