125 attend special movie preview, discussion

About 125 students attended Wednesday’s special showing of the movie “When the Game Stands Tall,” which features the true and remarkable story of the De La Salle High School from Concord, Calif.

This recently released movie features the journey of legendary football coach Bob Ladouceur, who took the De La Salle High School Spartans from obscurity to a 151-game winning streak that shattered all records for any American sport.

A panel discussion (including faculty members Dean Beckman and Joe Tadie and coaches Jen Miller, Jenna Sullivan, and David Barry) revolved around relationships that make a difference in our lives, the parallels between the concept of being on team and in a community, and that “We Lasallians” are successfully competitive.

This event was a team collaboration of the Student Activity Committee, the Living Learning Community Wide World and Sports, and the Athletic Department.

Men’s hockey team hosts Teddy Bear Toss Nov. 9

The men’s hockey team will hold a Teddy Bear Toss Sunday, Nov. 9, during the Cardinals’ 5 p.m. home game against St. Thomas at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.

Fans are encouraged to bring a teddy bear or stuffed animal—preferably new, but those in good used condition will also be accepted and appreciated. Teddy bears will also be available at the arena for a donation of $1.

After the first Saint Mary’s goal in the first period—or at the end of the first period—fans will have an opportunity to throw their teddy bears and/or stuffed animals onto the ice. They will then be collected and distributed to children in the Winona area through the Hiawatha Valley Marines Toys for Kids program.

The Marines formerly supported the Toys for Tots program; this new organization operates under the Winona Community Foundation, but the goal remains the same: to provide toys for area children at Christmas.

The Walk of Horror awaits for one more night

The 18th annual hair-raising fundraiser for the Cardinal fastpitch softball team will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. tonight, Oct. 31, in the campus bluffs. Walkers are asked to meet on the lighted path between the Saint Mary’s baseball and softball fields, where the haunted walk will begin.

Groups are then escorted through the dark bluffs for approximately 20 minutes.

The cost is $5 for adults, $4 for students with ID, and $4 for children 12 and younger. Tickets are available at the gate.

Head fastpitch softball coach Jen Miller said the event is fun for all ages. The scare level is toned down for younger children and turned up for groups bold enough to face their fears. Last year more than 1,100 brave souls took the Walk of Horror.

Hockey team members come to the rescue

Coach Bill Moore and members of the men’s hockey team heard that a Saint Mary’s colleague was scheduled for a significant surgery and moving to a new house in the same week.

Last Friday, eight students showed up ready to do some heavy lifting. They unloaded the moving truck and trailer in about an hour, and they did it all with smiles on their faces.

They were described as “amazing, wonderful and incredible” and their assistance will never be forgotten.

Euerle, Buerkle, Haley and Stolz honored at Cardinal ‘M’ Club ceremony

Katie Stolz and Aaron Haley were named outstanding Female and Male Athletes, and Courtney Euerle and Ben Buerkle were named Outstanding Female and Male Athletes.

The 2013-14 season proved to be the end of one dominating era, and the beginning of another.

Senior Courtney Euerle (Litchfield, Minn.) capped an illustrious career by leading the Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team to an MIAC regular-season title and NCAA tournament berth, while freshman Ben Buerkle (Roseville, Minn.) took the college baseball world by storm in helping guide the Cardinal baseball team to its third straight MIAC tournament berth.

And Friday evening, the two were honored for their efforts, being named Saint Mary’s  Outstanding Female and Male Athletes at the Cardinal ‘M’ Club Sports Hall of Fame and Awards Ceremony.

Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) and Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.), meanwhile, were named Outstanding Male and Female Scholar Athletes.

Friday’s festivities also included the induction of three new members into the Saint Mary’s Sports Hall of Fame, as the Cardinal ‘M’ Club, in association with the Saint Mary’s Alumni Office, welcomed the Class of 2014: Kelly (King) Stinson ’97 (fastpitch softball), Jennifer (Meyer) Fisher ’01 (fastpitch softball) and Chris Gogolewski ’94 (baseball).

Euerle’s final season in a Cardinal uniform was her best yet, as the senior post helped guide Saint Mary’s to an MIAC regular-season title, a berth in the MIAC tournament title game, and its first NCAA Tournament appearance in nearly three decades. Euerle, who led the team in both scoring and rebounding—including six games of 20 or more points and five double-doubles—was showered with post-season accolades, including MIAC Player of the Year, First-Team All-MIAC, MIAC All-Defensive Team, D3hoops.com All-West Region and D3hoops.com honorable-mention All-American.

Buerkle turned more than a few heads in his first season in a Cardinal uniform. The freshman outfielder boasted a team-best .405 batting average, while also leading or sharing the team lead in runs, hits, home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage en route to earning MIAC Rookie of the Year and ABCA Third-Team All-Region honors. The freshman outfielder had at least one hit in 36 of the 40 games he played in—and reached base safely in 39 of 40 contests.

An accounting/finance major with a 3.97 grade-point-average, Haley finished his junior season as the Cardinals’ top runner in all six cross country events he competed in. Haley saved his best for last, repeating as an All-MIAC selection with a school-record 8K time of 25:59 to place 13th overall at the MIAC Championships. He added a 35th-place time of 26:09 to earn All-Region honors at the NCAA Central Regional. During the outdoor track and field season, the junior etched his name in the Cardinal record books, shattering the school mark in the 10,000 with a time of 32:18.83.

Like Haley, Stolz was a dual-sport athlete during her junior year, competing on both the Cardinal women’s cross country and track and field teams. A biology major with a 4.00 GPA, Stolz broke the school record in the 6K twice during the cross country season, while shattering the steeplechase record three times, and setting a new school mark in the indoor 5,000. Earning First-Team All-MIAC honors in both cross country and outdoor track and field, Stolz was also honored with the MIAC’s Elite 22 award, honoring individuals who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

Let’s Do Lunch raises $368

Last week’s Let’s Do Lunch, sponsored by athletics, raised $368.50 for students in Nairobi. The Volunteer Committee would like to thank the Athletic Department for hosting this event, as well as everyone who attended the Let’s Do Lunches throughout the school year. Look forward to Let’s Do Ice Creams as the sun comes out this summer.

Tom Farren Golf Outing planned for July 20

The Tom Farren Memorial Golf Outing will be held Sunday, July 20, at Cedar Valley Golf Course. This is the sole fundraiser for the men’s and women’s golf programs and honors former Saint Mary’s golf Coach Tom Farren

Let’s Do Lunch to be hosted by athletics April 25

The next Let’s Do Lunch fundraiser will be a tailgate lunch, hosted by the Athletic Department, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 25, in the hockey arena lobby. Proceeds will be used for students in Nairobi. Enjoy burgers and brats on the grill and don’t forget an extra buck for chuck a puck!
