Tags still available on giving trees for Saint Mary’s University Gifts for Winona

Saint Mary’s University Gifts for Winona giving trees are still full of tags. This communitywide program is providing gifts to area children and seniors in need this holiday season.

Each tag is labeled with a different person’s holiday gift wishes. In addition to a tree in Saint Mary’s Hall, trees are located at the three Severson-Sinclair locations, Walmart, and Security State Bank of Lewiston. Additionally, grocery cards can be purchased for families at both HyVee and Midtown Foods.

The Saint Mary’s community is invited to take a tag from the Saint Mary’s tree, shop for items on the gift list, and return gifts by Dec. 10 to the Business Office. The recommended amount for holiday gifts is approximately $35 per person. Tags should be securely taped to the outside of the gift/gifts. They do not need to be wrapped.

As the gift distribution is early this year—mid-December—the community is asked to begin their season of giving early as well. The success of this program depends on the generosity of the Winona-area community.

The Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team is inviting the public to bring an unwrapped, new toy for a boy or girl to the Dec. 6 home game against Augsburg. The game will begin at 1 p.m. in Saint Mary’s gym. Toys will be distributed through Saint Mary’s University’s Gifts for Winona to a local child in time for Christmas.

Saint Mary’s University Gifts for Winona giving trees will be going up before Thanksgiving. This communitywide program is providing gifts to area children and seniors in need this holiday season.

The Saint Mary’s University Gifts for Winona program is “wrapping up.” Thanks go to everyone who shopped, wrapped, picked a tag, donated money, picked up gifts, did data entry and fielded phone calls. For 11 years, the SMU community has pulled together its talents to help make this communitywide gift-giving program a success. The Saint Mary’s Gifts For Winona Program deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 12. A tree with tags is located in the first floor of Saint Mary’s Hall. If you would like to make someone’s Christmas a little brighter, take a tag from the tree, shop for the wish list on the tag (spending about $35), and wrap the present or presents before returning them to the Business Office with the tag. This is the 11th year that Saint Mary’s has organized this community gift-giving program, and last year more than 1,600 individuals and families were served, thanks to the generosity of the SMU community and the Winona community.

SMU Gifts for Winona volunteer spots still open; gifts due Wednesday

Go to www.smumn.edu/giftsforwinona to volunteer for Saint Mary’s University Gifts for Winona. This annual program, in its 10th year, helps approximately 1,500 individuals have happier holidays.

The community-wide gift-giving program is a great way to get in the holiday spirit by helping those less fortunate. Volunteers are needed to help with picking up gifts from the various trees, located throughout town, and bringing them to the distribution site. Volunteers are also needed to help with shopping and wrapping. Check your calendars. Every person’s contribution helps to make this program a success. Saint Mary’s is proud to be able to provide this service!

Basketball teams to collect toys for Gifts for Winona

The men’s and women’s basketball teams are partnering with the Saint Mary’s University Gifts for Winona program to collect toys on Saturday, Dec. 3.

During Saturday’s doubleheader, the community is encouraged to bring along a variety of new toys for girls and boys, which will be distributed through Gifts for Winona, particularly to youth served by the Family and Children’s Center of Winona. The women’s team will play St. Olaf at 1 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 3 p.m., both in the SMU Gym.

Students donate tie blankets to Gifts for Winona

Students in Dr. Janet Heukeshoven’s First-Year Seminar class made more than 20 children’s tie blankets as their Lasallian community service project. The class is the Saint Teresa Leadership and Service Institute section. The blankets were given to families with young children who asked for help through the Saint Mary’s University Gifts for Winona program. These blankets will help make many children’s holidays warmer and happier.

Gifts for Winona a success

The Saint Mary’s University gifts for Winona program is once again nearing completion. For nine years, the SMU community has sponsored and organized this communitywide gift giving program. Many thanks to go all the generous benefactors, shoppers, organizers, wrappers and other volunteers who helped this year. Because of your support, we were able to fulfill wishes for more than 1,400 tags. Each of these tags represents an individual who received not only gifts, but also the knowledge that this community truly cares!

‘Gifts for Winona’ nears completion; gifts due today

Today is the last day to get your gifts in for Saint Mary’s University Gifts for Winona. Because the community distribution is early, gifts MUST be returned today, Friday, Dec. 11!

Approximately 1,400 tags went out through the program this year. The early deadline is a priority so that this large number of gifts may be properly sorted and recorded.

Gifts from SMU tree tags can be returned to the Business Office. If you are unable to return your gift today, please call Deb Nahrgang at Ext. 6966 with tag identification information. A monetary donation can also still be made; make checks payable to SMU GFW and send to Gifts for Winona, Box #8 or drop off at the Business Office windows.
