Euerle, Buerkle, Haley and Stolz honored at Cardinal ‘M’ Club ceremony

Katie Stolz and Aaron Haley were named outstanding Female and Male Athletes, and Courtney Euerle and Ben Buerkle were named Outstanding Female and Male Athletes.

The 2013-14 season proved to be the end of one dominating era, and the beginning of another.

Senior Courtney Euerle (Litchfield, Minn.) capped an illustrious career by leading the Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team to an MIAC regular-season title and NCAA tournament berth, while freshman Ben Buerkle (Roseville, Minn.) took the college baseball world by storm in helping guide the Cardinal baseball team to its third straight MIAC tournament berth.

And Friday evening, the two were honored for their efforts, being named Saint Mary’s  Outstanding Female and Male Athletes at the Cardinal ‘M’ Club Sports Hall of Fame and Awards Ceremony.

Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) and Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.), meanwhile, were named Outstanding Male and Female Scholar Athletes.

Friday’s festivities also included the induction of three new members into the Saint Mary’s Sports Hall of Fame, as the Cardinal ‘M’ Club, in association with the Saint Mary’s Alumni Office, welcomed the Class of 2014: Kelly (King) Stinson ’97 (fastpitch softball), Jennifer (Meyer) Fisher ’01 (fastpitch softball) and Chris Gogolewski ’94 (baseball).

Euerle’s final season in a Cardinal uniform was her best yet, as the senior post helped guide Saint Mary’s to an MIAC regular-season title, a berth in the MIAC tournament title game, and its first NCAA Tournament appearance in nearly three decades. Euerle, who led the team in both scoring and rebounding—including six games of 20 or more points and five double-doubles—was showered with post-season accolades, including MIAC Player of the Year, First-Team All-MIAC, MIAC All-Defensive Team, D3hoops.com All-West Region and D3hoops.com honorable-mention All-American.

Buerkle turned more than a few heads in his first season in a Cardinal uniform. The freshman outfielder boasted a team-best .405 batting average, while also leading or sharing the team lead in runs, hits, home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage en route to earning MIAC Rookie of the Year and ABCA Third-Team All-Region honors. The freshman outfielder had at least one hit in 36 of the 40 games he played in—and reached base safely in 39 of 40 contests.

An accounting/finance major with a 3.97 grade-point-average, Haley finished his junior season as the Cardinals’ top runner in all six cross country events he competed in. Haley saved his best for last, repeating as an All-MIAC selection with a school-record 8K time of 25:59 to place 13th overall at the MIAC Championships. He added a 35th-place time of 26:09 to earn All-Region honors at the NCAA Central Regional. During the outdoor track and field season, the junior etched his name in the Cardinal record books, shattering the school mark in the 10,000 with a time of 32:18.83.

Like Haley, Stolz was a dual-sport athlete during her junior year, competing on both the Cardinal women’s cross country and track and field teams. A biology major with a 4.00 GPA, Stolz broke the school record in the 6K twice during the cross country season, while shattering the steeplechase record three times, and setting a new school mark in the indoor 5,000. Earning First-Team All-MIAC honors in both cross country and outdoor track and field, Stolz was also honored with the MIAC’s Elite 22 award, honoring individuals who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

The trio will be honored during an awards ceremony on Friday, Sept. 12. Along with the induction of this year’s Hall of Fame class, Friday’s ceremony will also honor Saint Mary’s 2013-14 postseason award-winners, and recognize the 2013-14 Outstanding Male and Female Athletes, and Outstanding Scholar Athletes.

It was a memorable 2012-13 for Peter Borash ’13 and Alex Raske ’15 — and year became even more memorable Friday evening when the two were named Outstanding Male and Female Athletes during part of the Cardinal 'M' Club Sports Hall of Fame and Awards Ceremony.

Jake Traxler ’13 and Bethany Schmidt ’14, meanwhile, were named SMU's Outstanding Male and Female Scholar Athletes.

Alumni and student-athletes are honored Sept. 7

Kevin Gannon (Roselle, Ill.) and Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) enjoyed banner years during the 2011-12 academic year, capping off their stellar seasons by being named Saint Mary’s Outstanding Male and Female Athletes during the Cardinal ‘M’ Club Sports Hall of Fame and awards ceremony Friday evening.

Regina Quandt (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.) meanwhile, were named SMU’s Outstanding Male and Female Scholar Athletes.

Friday’s ceremony also included the induction of three new members into the SMU Sports Hall of Fame, as the Cardinal ‘M’ Club, in association with the Saint Mary's Alumni Office, welcomed the Class of 2012: Chris Kendall ’79 (baseball), Anne Erickson ’89 (women’s soccer) and Alex Kugel ’99 (men’s soccer).

Along with Friday’s awards ceremony, ‘M’ Club Weekend included a Saturday golf outing,  with more than 100 golfers at Cedar Valley Golf Course for an afternoon of fun and camaraderie. The weekend’s festivities concluded on Sunday, with several teams hosting alumni games.

The Cardinal ‘M’ Club fosters and strengthens relationships between SMU and its alumni, families and friends. Gifts to the Cardinal ‘M’ Club help provide a quality experience for student-athletes. The Cardinal ‘M’ Club has been instrumental in building strong traditions and impacting athletics at Saint Mary’s.

Hall of Fame inductees enjoyed time on the golf course during Cardinal 'M' Club Weekend.

For the second year in a row, Andrew Brueggen (Holmen, Wis.) and Sarah Gardner (Rochester, Minn.) were named Saint Mary’s Outstanding Male and Female Athletes.

The awards were announced at the Cardinal ‘M’ Club Sports Hall of Fame and Awards Ceremony on Sept 10.

Additionally, Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) and David Feather (Oak Creek, Wis.) were named SMU’s Outstanding Male and Female Scholar Athletes.

Saturday's festivities also included the induction of three new members into the Sports Hall of Fame, as the Cardinal ‘M’ Club, in association with the Saint Mary's Alumni Office, welcomed the Class of 2011 — Nate DeMars ’98 men’s hockey), Frank Savino ‘98 (men’s hockey) and John Redpath ’98 (men’s hockey) — into the Hall.

Sports information director Donny Nadeau was also honored, as he was presented with the MIAC’s Mike Augustin Award for his outstanding contributions and years of service to both Saint Mary’s and the conference.

Three to be inducted to Sports Hall of Fame Sept. 10

The Saint Mary’s Cardinal ‘M’ Club, in association with the Alumni Office, will induct three members into the SMU Sports Hall of Fame during a special ceremony Saturday, Sept. 10, in the gymnasium.

Nate DeMars ’98 and Frank Savino ’98 were linemates for the Saint Mary’s University men’s hockey team for four years. The third member of this year’s Class of 2011 inductees is John Redpath ’80, a standout for the Saint Mary’s hockey teams of the late ’70s, and also DeMars’ uncle.

In their four years together, Savino and DeMars were one of the most prolific, goal-scoring duos in the country. The two combined for 377 points and rank second (DeMars) and third (Savino) to Andre Beaulieu in career points.

A four-year letterwinner, Savino was named to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team in each of his four years as a Cardinal. Savino’s junior year was one for the record books, as he compiled 40 goals and 62 points — both ranked No. 5 all-time in the program’s history — while earning MIAC Player of the Year and First-Team All-American honors. In his four years at SMU, Savino ranks No. 3 all-time in career goals (111) and career points (111).

Also a four-year letterwinner, DeMars earned All-MIAC First-Team honors three times, while also being named Second Team All-American during his junior season, when he posted 40 assists — the fourth-best single-season assist total in program history — and finished a point behind Savino with 61. DeMars closed out his collegiate career as SMU’s all-time assist leader (108), while ranking second in career points (189) and fifth in career goals (81).

Redpath earned First-Team All-MIAC honors in both his junior and senior seasons, while also being named an NAIA First-Team All-American during his senior season. Redpath, a four-year letterwinner, finished among the top 20 in SMU history in single-season goals (23) and points (51).

Other activities included in Cardinal ‘M’ Club Weekend, Sept. 9-11, will include athletic awards, golf, alumni games, a social, and a picnic.

The Hall of Fame Class of 2010 — Teisha (Smith ’00) Devine (fastpitch softball), George Hoder ’67 (basketball) and John Tschida ’90 (Fastpitch Softball Coach) — will be honored during a ceremony Saturday evening, Sept. 11, in the SMU gymnasium.



Along with the induction of this year’s Hall of Fame class, SMU’s 2009-10 postseason award-winners, as well as last year’s outstanding male and female athletes, and outstanding scholar athletes, will also be recognized. The weekend festivities begin on Friday with a men’s hockey alumni game, continue Saturday morning with a golf outing at Cedar Valley Golf Course and conclude on Sunday with a picnic and various alumni games on the SMU campus.

TEISHA (SMITH ’00) DEVINE
Chicago Fastpitch Softball
Teisha (Smith ’00) Devine was a four-year letterwinner who was instrumental in guiding the Saint Mary’s University fastpitch softball team to its first-ever NCAA Division III National Championship in 2000. A three-time All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, Smith led the Cardinals to three straight MIAC regular-season titles in 1997,1998 and 1999. She was named to the NFCA All-Region Team three times — a first-team selection in 1998 and a second-team pick in 1999 and 2000. A two-time team captain and member of the NCAA Regional and National All-Tournament teams, she ranks first in school history in earned-run-average (1.04), while ranking second in career wins (58), third in complete games (35) and shutouts (18) and fifth in strikeouts (215). She also holds the single-season school records for complete games (15) and shutouts (8) and is second in wins (21), appearances (28) and games started (24). During the Cardinals’ run to the 2000 national championship, she went 21-2 and won her last 18 starts — including a perfect 7-0 mark during SMU’s seven post-season games.

A four-year letterwinner, George Hoder ’67 is one of just 24 players in the program’s history to eclipse the 1,000-point barrier, having netted 1,260 points during his career. Hoder also ranked 10th in program history in free throws attempted (408) and rebounds (536). Hoder averaged a career-best 14.4 ppg during his junior season, when he tossed in 124 field goals on 297 attempts, while also shooting 64 percent from the free throw line (111-for-171).

JOHN TSCHIDA ’90
Saint Paul, Minn. Fastpitch Softball Coach
John Tschida ’90 spent six years as the Cardinals’ head fastpitch coach, guiding SMU to post-season appearances in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. His Cardinals won back-to-back-to-back Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crowns in 1997, 1998 and 1999, and his 2000 SMU team became the first in school history to capture the NCAA Division III national title. Following the 2000 season, Tschida accepted the head coaching position at the University of St. Thomas, where he coached the Tommies to back-to-back national championships in 2004 and 2005. With his UST national crown in 2004, Tschida became the first fastpitch coach to win NCAA titles at two different schools. A 1990 graduate of SMU — where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Cardinal baseball team — Tschida is the winningest Division III coach, active or retired, boasting a 573-98 record and an .854 winning percentage. Tschida has been named MIAC Coach of the Year in eight of his 15 years at the helm at SMU and UST. His teams have been nationally ranked each year, and in the last 13 seasons have posted a 273-13 record in conference regular-season play. In nine seasons at St. Thomas, his teams have swept 91 conference twinbills, split seven and were swept just once, and in all games vs. conference opponents are 208-9 (.958).

Tom Pepper, Chicago

A three-year letterwinner and an NAIA All-District performer his senior season, Tom Pepper still remains one of the premier scorers in SMU men’s basketball history. His 1,281 points and 16.9 career per-game scoring average rank him ninth all-time, despite having only played three seasons at Saint Mary’s, after transferring from NCAA Division I Loyola Marymount University. Upon graduation, Pepper traded in his sneakers for a coach’s whistle, coaching high school basketball at St. Mel’s and Farragut Academy in Chicago.


Sue Otto, Santa Monica, Calif.

A four-year letterwinner, Sue Otto was a stabilizing force for the Saint Mary’s University women’s soccer team — a team that won three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and made three trips to the NCAA Division III national tournament, including a semifinal appearance in 1986. An All-MIAC First-Team selection in 1988 and 1989, Otto and the Cardinals lost just two conference games in her four-year career, going 47-2-0. Along with her all-conference honors, Otto was also a two-time First Team All-West Region pick in 1988-89, as well as a Third-Team All-American during her junior year, and a First-Team All-American and team MVP during her senior season. Otto appeared in 77 games during her four-year career, compiling 17 goals and 27 assists for 61 points. Her 27 assists rank No. 5 all-time in SMU women’s soccer history, while her 61 points are 11th and her 17 goals put her 12th.

Chad Doerre, Joliet, Ill.

A four-year letterwinner, Chad Doerre is one of the most accomplished pitchers to come through the Saint Mary’s baseball program. As a freshman, Doerre helped pitch the Cardinals to their most recent Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and a second-place showing in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. A two-time First-Team All-MIAC selection in 1995 and 1996, Doerre closed out his career with a 22-7 record with 11 complete games. Athletes, alumni honored at ‘M’ Club weekend festivities

In recognition of their 2008 baseball and softball successes Brady Knudsen ’08 and Cassie Otte ’09 were named Saint Mary’s Outstanding Male and Female Athletes during the Cardinal ‘M’ Club Sports Hall of Fame and Awards Ceremony Sept. 13. Kevin Black ’08 and Kasey Schultz ’08 were named SMU’s Outstanding Male and Female Scholar Athletes.

Saturday evening’s festivities also included the induction of five new members into the SMU Sports Hall of Fame: Jen Garin ’99 (fastpitch softball), Dick Kuehl ’57 (baseball), Duane Kuehl ’58 (baseball, posthumously), Katie Kortsch ’95 (women’s soccer) and Brad Wiley ’90 (men’s hockey).

In a special portion of Saturday’s ceremony, longtime hockey coach and athletic director Don Olson was recognized for his 32 years of service to Saint Mary’s; retiring faculty athletic representative Larry Luttmers was also honored.

The weekend kicked off with the seventh annual Cardinal ‘M’ Club golf outing, where more than 120 golfers converged on the Cedar Valley Golf Course. On Sunday, former student-athletes took part in alumni games in baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s hockey, swimming and diving, and tennis.

Along with the induction of this year’s Hall of Fame class, Saturday’s ceremony will also honor former men’s hockey coach and athletic director Don Olson for his 32 years of dedicated service to Saint Mary’s. The Hall of Fame Class of 2007 was honored during a ceremony Saturday evening. They include Vicki (Wilson ’96) Greene (basketball, volleyball), Kevin Henthorne ’93 (baseball), Mike Horvath ’82 (basketball), and Julie (Giebe ’97) Houchin (soccer).

SMU’s 2006-07 award-winners, as well as last year’s Outstanding Male and Female Athletes, and Outstanding Scholar Athletes were also honored. Amanda Weinmann was named Outstanding Female Athlete and Outstanding Scholar Athlete. Nick Winecke was named Outstanding Male Athlete, and Joey Manley received the Male Scholar Athlete Award.
