Euerle, Buerkle, Haley and Stolz honored at Cardinal ‘M’ Club ceremony

Katie Stolz and Aaron Haley were named outstanding Female and Male Athletes, and Courtney Euerle and Ben Buerkle were named Outstanding Female and Male Athletes.

The 2013-14 season proved to be the end of one dominating era, and the beginning of another.

Senior Courtney Euerle (Litchfield, Minn.) capped an illustrious career by leading the Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team to an MIAC regular-season title and NCAA tournament berth, while freshman Ben Buerkle (Roseville, Minn.) took the college baseball world by storm in helping guide the Cardinal baseball team to its third straight MIAC tournament berth.

And Friday evening, the two were honored for their efforts, being named Saint Mary’s  Outstanding Female and Male Athletes at the Cardinal ‘M’ Club Sports Hall of Fame and Awards Ceremony.

Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) and Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.), meanwhile, were named Outstanding Male and Female Scholar Athletes.

Friday’s festivities also included the induction of three new members into the Saint Mary’s Sports Hall of Fame, as the Cardinal ‘M’ Club, in association with the Saint Mary’s Alumni Office, welcomed the Class of 2014: Kelly (King) Stinson ’97 (fastpitch softball), Jennifer (Meyer) Fisher ’01 (fastpitch softball) and Chris Gogolewski ’94 (baseball).

Euerle’s final season in a Cardinal uniform was her best yet, as the senior post helped guide Saint Mary’s to an MIAC regular-season title, a berth in the MIAC tournament title game, and its first NCAA Tournament appearance in nearly three decades. Euerle, who led the team in both scoring and rebounding—including six games of 20 or more points and five double-doubles—was showered with post-season accolades, including MIAC Player of the Year, First-Team All-MIAC, MIAC All-Defensive Team, D3hoops.com All-West Region and D3hoops.com honorable-mention All-American.

Buerkle turned more than a few heads in his first season in a Cardinal uniform. The freshman outfielder boasted a team-best .405 batting average, while also leading or sharing the team lead in runs, hits, home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage en route to earning MIAC Rookie of the Year and ABCA Third-Team All-Region honors. The freshman outfielder had at least one hit in 36 of the 40 games he played in—and reached base safely in 39 of 40 contests.

An accounting/finance major with a 3.97 grade-point-average, Haley finished his junior season as the Cardinals’ top runner in all six cross country events he competed in. Haley saved his best for last, repeating as an All-MIAC selection with a school-record 8K time of 25:59 to place 13th overall at the MIAC Championships. He added a 35th-place time of 26:09 to earn All-Region honors at the NCAA Central Regional. During the outdoor track and field season, the junior etched his name in the Cardinal record books, shattering the school mark in the 10,000 with a time of 32:18.83.

Like Haley, Stolz was a dual-sport athlete during her junior year, competing on both the Cardinal women’s cross country and track and field teams. A biology major with a 4.00 GPA, Stolz broke the school record in the 6K twice during the cross country season, while shattering the steeplechase record three times, and setting a new school mark in the indoor 5,000. Earning First-Team All-MIAC honors in both cross country and outdoor track and field, Stolz was also honored with the MIAC’s Elite 22 award, honoring individuals who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

Schild’s poem wins Lanesboro Art Center contest

A poem written by Dr. Steve Schild, Communications, was chosen as one of the winners in a contest sponsored by the Lanesboro (Minn.) Art Center. Schild’s poem, one of 15 selected from more than 170 submissions, is on display with the other winning entries in a park in Lanesboro.

Three to be added to Hall of Fame during ‘M’ Club Weekend

The  Cardinal ’M‘ Club, in association with the Alumni Association, will induct three members into the Saint Mary’s Sports Hall of Fame during Cardinal ’M‘ Club Weekend Friday-Sunday, Sept. 12-14.

The 2014 Saint Mary’s University Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony will honor former student-athletes Jennifer (Meyer) Fisher ’01, Kelly (King) Stinson ‘97, Chris Gogolewski ’94.

The trio will be honored during an awards ceremony on Friday, Sept. 12. Along with the induction of this year’s Hall of Fame class, Friday’s ceremony will also honor Saint Mary’s 2013-14 postseason award-winners, and recognize the 2013-14 Outstanding Male and Female Athletes, and Outstanding Scholar Athletes.

Students win awards at science convention

Winners of the Frank G. Brook Awards for paper presentation and John J. Johnson poster presentations: Katie Stolz and Kristen Thelen (first place, Brook), Amy Spitzmueller (first place, Johnson), and Collin Niehaus (third place, Johnson).

Twelve biology students, one biochemistry student, one chemistry student and one physics student presented at the Minnesota Academy of Science (MAS) Winchell Symposium /NC-3 Beta Beta Beta District convention that was at Saint Mary’s on April 26.

Two students received awards for the best paper presentation for their section by MAS. Those students were Amy Spitzmueller, “Heavy Metal Analysis of Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) from East Lake Winona” (advisor Dr. Ray Faber), and Elizabeth Arnold, “Extraction of Glands and Analysis of the Toxin in Tadpole Madtoms (Noturus gyrinus)” (advisor Dr. Randy Krainock). Three students received awards for best poster presentations by MAS: Those students were Amy Spitzmueller and Kristen Thelen, “The Impact of Chronic Exposure to Atrazine on PCV, Cell Size and Shape in Chicken and Pheasants” (advisor Dr. Debra Martin); and Collin Niehaus, “Size and age structure of black, golden, and shorthead redhorse in the north branch Root River” (advisor Dr. Phil Cochran).

Additionally, District Beta Beta Beta awards were given out. For the John J. Johnson Award for best poster, Amy Spitzmueller won first place, Kristen Thelen won second place and Collin Niehaus won third place.  For the Frank G. Brook Awards for best paper (oral) presentation, first place was won by Kristen Thelen and Katie Stolz for their presentation, “The effects of in utero exposure to atrazine on the hematopoietic system in Mus musculus” (advisor Dr. Debra Martin). Second place was won by Amy Spitzmueller.

Also attending from SMU were Jillian Martin, Anna Smaron, Anthony Garoutte, Kristen Gustafson, Alberta Gittens, Bethany Schmidt, Lisa Obasi, Amanda Ferstead, Alex Thomas, and Evan Shockley.

Dick Kowles’ book a finalist for Midwest Book Award

The latest book published by Dr. Dick Kowles, SMU professor emeritus in biology, has been chosen to be a finalist in its category in the Midwest Book Awards. “A Passion To Teach. Fifty-Eight Years of Humorous, Weird, and Engaging Tales” is a trade book geared toward readership of both educators and the general public.  Winners of each book category will be announced at a gala celebration in Saint Paul on May 14.

Employee service awards are April 23

The employee service awards and retirement celebrations are nearing. The Winona campus celebration will be on Wednesday, April 23, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Saint Mary’s Hall Common Room.

SMU College Republicans receive award

The Saint Mary’s College Republicans chapter received the Chapter of the Year Award April 5 at the annual Minnesota College Republican Convention in Minneapolis.

The chapter began only two years ago when a small group of students organized for the primary purpose of attending the Conservative Political Action Conference. This year the club experienced tremendous growth, more than doubling in size and increasing its communication with the state board.

Andrew Hasek, Minnesota College Republicans chairman, said, “The Saint Mary’s College Republicans are truly deserving of the award. They have worked extremely hard all year growing their footprint on campus and helping local candidates. I am excited for the prospects the group has moving forward.”

They organized a variety of events this past year including Second Amendment Day. They also conducted weekly meetings and brought in a variety of speakers including gubernatorial and United States Congressional candidates. The club also reached out to the community by attending caucus night. The College Republicans are looking to continue to grow and promote their ideas on campus, along with increasing community outreach and service.

100 presentations planned for Celebration of Scholarship

The Celebration of Scholarship — Saint Mary’s annual celebration highlighting the accomplishments of undergraduate students across all academic disciplines — will be held Friday, April 11. More than 100 presentations by more than 130 students are planned. The SMU community is invited to view the research and talents of our students.

The event will take place at various locations  and times on campus. Attendees are asked to register in Saint Mary’s Hall, on the first floor, before attending presentations. The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. For more information, visit www.smumn.edu/studentscholars.

The day will culminate at 4:45 p.m. with the Honors Convocation in Page Theatre. At the convocation students will be recognized for outstanding activity by membership in honor societies, completion of the honors program, and departmental awards. Saint Mary’s presented awards to three educators, a staff member, and two outstanding seniors at its Founders’ Day celebration April 1.

Presidential Awards for Outstanding Merit were presented to two educators who are alumni of Saint Mary’s: Lillie Pang, principal of Hale School in Minneapolis; and Stephen Murray, assistant principal and dean of students at Aquinas High School in La Crosse, Wis.

Pang, who received a certificate in education administration from Saint Mary’s in 1999, has worked as an elementary school teacher in Wisconsin, California, Illinois, Japan and Minnesota for 22 years. As a successful urban school administrator in Minneapolis for the past 14 years, she has worked tirelessly to support instructional excellence, build community and service connections for families, and promote inclusive and safe schools. She has served as a leading voice in Minnesota for equity and excellence in public schools.

Murray, a 1971 alumnus, has demonstrated selfless service, faith-filled teaching and administrative leadership and has served as an extraordinary role model for his family. Murray first served the Diocese of Winona at Pacelli High School for 22 years as a teacher of English and religion, chair of the religion department and coordinator of student service projects. He then went on to work for the past 20 years in the Diocese of La Crosse at Aquinas High School as a religion teacher, dean of students and now assistant principal/dean of students.

Dr. Richard Tristano, professor of history at Saint Mary’s, received the Distinguished Lasallian Educator award. These awards are given by Lasallian institutions in the North American-Toronto Region of the De La Salle Christian Brothers to honor contributions and commitment to the Lasallian mission of education. Dr. Tristano has shared his enthusiasm and passion for history with Saint Mary’s students for 22 years. This award recognizes his commitment to teaching excellence, his scholarly research and writing — especially regarding Saint John Baptist de La Salle and Lasallian history and pedagogy — and the spirit of faith and zeal he brings to his work at Saint Mary’s.

Donny Nadeau, sports information director, received the Bishop Patrick Heffron Award for service to the university. Nadeau, a 1985 alumnus of Saint Mary’s, has served as sports information director for more than 19 years. His work has earned recognition at both the conference and national levels, and his commitment and dedication serve as an inspiration to others at the university. Heffron Award winners are chosen because they have contributed positively to the life of the university, have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the values of the university, and have been models of the Lasallian spirit in their interactions with colleagues and students.

The Outstanding Male and Female Senior awards were presented to Amy Spitzmueller, daughter of Kathy and Bill Spitzmueller of New Brighton, Minn., and Miles Dunna, son of Wokie Dunna of Saint Paul, Minn. Outstanding Seniors have demonstrated the ideals of scholarship, character, leadership and service. Above all, these men and women have shown genuine concern for meeting the needs of others. Gaut, Neff receive award from Society of Architectural Historians

The Minnesota Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians presented the 2014 David Stanley Gebhard Award for the best article to Greg Gaut (retired history professor) and Marsha Neff for “Downsizing the Public Realm: The Building and Razing of Winona's Grand Post Office.” Published by Minnesota History in the Summer 2013 issue, their article tells the story of how Winona got and lost its impressive post office.

The award was presented at the society’s annual meeting on March 19 at the Minnesota Humanities Center in St. Paul. Thomas Fisher, dean of the School of Design at the University of Minnesota, was the featured speaker.

Every two years the society gives Gebhard Awards for an article and a book on Minnesota’s architectural history. The book award winner this year was John W. Diers for St. Paul's Union Depot (University of Minnesota Press, 2013).

In 2008, Gaut and Neff won the Gebhard Award for their article on a closely related preservation controversy titled “Save the Lady: The Struggle for the Winona County Courthouse.” It was published in the Winter 2005/2006 issue of Minnesota History.

Rodgers to be honored by alma mater

Dr. James Rodgers, Social Science, was selected by the alumni board of his undergraduate alma mater, Northwestern Oklahoma State, as the Most Outstanding Graduate from NWOSU in the field of education. He will travel to NWOSU, located in Alva,  to receive the award on April 26. He received his bachelor’s degree from there in 1975.

Hendrickson Forum to be broadcast on Winona campus

Each year, the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership sponsors a forum that brings an internationally renowned leader to the Twin Cities campus for a keynote address. This year, the event will be live streamed to the Winona campus, so that everyone can participate in the event.

This year’s speaker is the Honorable Sheila Bair, former chair of the FDIC during the Great Recession. Bair is an exceptional leader, speaker and commentator on the fiscal health of the United States and beyond, and was named the second most powerful woman in the World by Forbes magazine in 2008. Her address is titled “Main Street vs. Wall Street and the New Financial Paradigm,” through which she will address timely topics including short-term gratifications to long-term economic stability, producing real value to generate meaningful economic gains, global challenges and other 21st century issues.

In addition, Chris Policinski, CEO of Land O’Lakes, will be awarded the Hendrickson Medal for Ethical Leadership during the event. The event will be moderated by Fred de Sam Lazaro, director of SMU’s Under-Told Stories Project and a correspondent for PBS NewsHour.

The Winona community will be able to watch the event live in three locations around campus: Page Theater, Room 9 of the Toner Student Center and the Common Room.
       
The full event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The welcoming remarks and presentation of the Hendrickson Medal for Ethical Leadership will occur between 11:30 and 11:50 a.m. Bair’s remarks will take place from approximately 12:10-1:15 p.m. (There is a break in the event from 11:50 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. as lunch is served to those attending on the Minneapolis campus.)

Brook award for best paper (oral) presentation was Bridget Richardson with her presentation “The antibacterial effectiveness of the goggle sanitizer which uses UV radiation as a means of disinfection” (Dr. Jeanne Minnerath advisor).
