Study Abroad Fair a success

On Tuesday, Sept. 23, Saint Mary’s hosted its second Study Abroad Fair. The event was well-attended and showcased the various study abroad programs available to Saint Mary’s students. Study Abroad Office staff, students who studied abroad, representatives from affiliated programs, and faculty leaders of short-term study abroad programs were all on hand to answer questions. Study Abroad Fair Sept. 23

Students and faculty are encouraged to visit the Study Abroad Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, in the President’s Room. Explore the variety of study abroad opportunities available to Saint Mary’s students. Representatives from Saint Mary’s affiliated study abroad programs, faculty leaders of short-term programs, and past student study abroad participants will be on hand to answer questions and provide information.

Theatre students perform in London

Saint Mary’s University theatre majors, under the direction of Dr. Gary Diomandes, are staging the tragic play, “The Triangle Factory Fire Project,” Oct. 22-26 at TARA Studio in London.

“1 CIGARETTE, 28 MINUTES, 148 DEAD”

On Saturday, March 25, 1911 at Triangle Waist Factory off downtown Manhattan's Washington Square, 500 immigrant workers from Poland, Russia and Italy are toiling 14-hour days making lady’s dresses. Suddenly, a cigarette is tossed into a bin of fabric scraps.

Despite desperate efforts, flames sweep through the eighth, ninth and 10th floors. Panic-stricken workers run in all directions. On the ninth floor, some make it to the fire escape, only to have it collapse beneath their weight. Others run to the exit door but find it locked—many, including the soon-to-be-married Margaret Schwartz, die with their hands on the doorknob. Dozens leap from the windows to their deaths, shocking the crowd of onlookers gathered below. And some, through bravery or sheer luck, make it out alive. In the space of 28 minutes, the fire is under control, but 146 people, mainly young immigrant girls, have died.

The Triangle Factory Fire Project uses eyewitness accounts, court transcripts and other archival material to create a dramatic moment-by-moment account of this historic fire and the social upheaval that followed. It culminates in the manslaughter trial of the owners, Isaac Harris and Max Blanck, whose shocking acquittal inspires new outrage across New York and the entire country, the repercussions of which shaped social, political and economic policies for decades to come. By using real words spoken by real people, from Ukrainian seamstresses to millionaire Fifth Avenue socialites, The Triangle Factory Fire Project paints a heartbreakingly clear picture of a disastrous day in American history and explores the human toll such a tragedy takes on us all.

Qualified theatre majors at Saint Mary’s are studying theatre in London, England, this semester through the Stefannié Valéncia Kierlin Theatre in London Program. Under the guidance of Saint Mary’s faculty, the program includes a variety of classes in theatre, as well as courses focusing on broader enrichment. Students have the unique opportunity to attend numerous performances at London’s West End, Off-West End, and Fringe theatres.

Study Abroad Fair a success

SMU alum Marcy Mueller talked to students at Salesian Lay Ministers

Last Thursday Saint Mary’s hosted its first Study Abroad Fair. The event was well-attended and showcased the various study abroad programs available to Saint Mary’s students. Study abroad office staff, students who studied abroad, representatives from affiliated programs, and faculty leaders of short-term study abroad programs were all on hand to answer questions. Furthermore, the Office of Campus Ministry and representatives from volunteer organizations provided information on opportunities to volunteer abroad.

Study abroad fair scheduled for Sept. 26

A study abroad fair will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Toner Student Center President’s Room.

Students can get information on our study abroad programs, talk to program representatives, and meet study abroad returnees. International volunteer opportunities will also be promoted.

Study abroad student produces YouTube video

Saint Mary’s study abroad student Zach Palma was one of the students who created videos as part of a workshop hosted by HECUA and conducted by the Center for Digital Story Telling, July 28-31, in Saint Paul. The student storytellers have created powerful, first-person videos about the challenges and inspirations of learning in community with others. Saint Mary’s theatre students to perform in London

Saint Mary’s theatre majors will stage the comedic satire “Greater Tuna” Oct. 18-22 at TARA Studio in London.

In this hilarious satire of small-town American morals, audiences will meet the upstanding citizens of rural Tuna, Texas (the state’s third smallest town). The long-running Off Broadway hit features eight actors creating the entire population of Tuna — men, women, children and animals — in a tour de farce of quick-change artistry, changing costumes and characterizations.

It’s eight actors, 20 characters and a barrel of laughs, y’all.

Kuramota receives Study Abroad Italy scholarship

Saint Mary’s student Sloane Kuramoto is the Fall 2011 recipient of the John Cabot University Scholarship.

Study Abroad Italy (SAI) and John Cabot University offer these scholarships based on need and merit in both fall and spring semesters.

Kuramoto received the $4,475 fellowship — This fellowship requires five hours per week of internship in the SAI office on site. Duties include assisting SAI Program Coordinator and lasts the duration of the term, except for holiday or midterm breaks.

The Office of Study Abroad and Career Services invites the SMU community to a Study Abroad photo contest reception on Monday, April 18, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Refreshments will be available. A short award ceremony will begin at 3:45 p.m., during which the winning photos will be announced.

Student featured in Spanish news

An SMU student, Logan Patrick Davis Lanz, was featured in a video done by the Spanish news in Seville about Thanksgiving.

The Spanish news channel TVE recently featured students in Seville as they shared Thanksgiving dinner in Spain. The report teaches Spaniards about the American tradition, while students express the importance of the holiday and of celebrating it together while they are away from home.

Theatre students to perform in London, Ireland

Saint Mary’s theatre majors will stage the highly theatrical disturbing docu-drama “God’s Country” from through Oct. 23 at TARA Studio in London and Nov. 29-30 at Smock Alley Studio Theatre in Ireland.

Written by Steven Dietz, the emotionally gripping plot takes a close look at the shocking history of the white supremacist movement in the USA.
