The Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team is inviting the public to bring an unwrapped, new toy for a boy or girl to the Dec. 6 home game against Augsburg. The game will begin at 1 p.m. in Saint Mary’s gym. Toys will be distributed through Saint Mary’s University’s Gifts for Winona to a local child in time for Christmas.
Elementary and preschool children from the Winona area are invited to attend the 12th annual Saint Mary’s Halloween Fun Night from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29.
Donations of individually wrapped candy by the bag and/or financial donations are appreciated and can be dropped off at the Office of Residence Life. It takes a lot of candy to make this event successful and keep 750 trick-or-treaters happy. Financial contributions can be sent to Box. 9.
Young trick-or-treaters will start out the evening at the Hall of Fame Room, located in the Toner Student Center, where tattoos and stickers, a coloring station, and other fun games will be offered, and the Cardinal mascot will greet pint-sized ghosts and goblins.
From there, SMU students will lead groups of trick-or-treaters through the residence halls of the university, where they can go door to door for candy.
Last year more than 750 youth participated in this free, safe and fun event, sponsored by the Office of Residence Life of Saint Mary’s.
The United Way of the Greater Winona Area is offering free tax preparation assistance to anyone with low to moderate income. Saint Mary’s University has donated used computers for this service and is considered a sponsor in this program, which will be held 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1., at Winona Health’s Sarnia Square building, 420 E. Sarnia St. Participants should use the back entrance.

$2 million anonymous gift helps purchase purchase of Harrington Mansion and Events Center
Saint Mary’s has finalized its purchase of the Harrington Mansion and Events Center, located adjacent to the university’s Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs (SGPP) in Minneapolis. Saint Mary’s plans to use the property, formerly owned by the Zuhrah Shriners, for expansion of its graduate programs, community outreach, and alumni event venues.
“This is an investment both in our campus and in the Twin Cities community,” said Brother William. “Saint Mary’s is expanding to meet our growth in educational offerings. We see this as an investment to not only provide educational access to those who increasingly are excluded from it, but also a commitment to help revitalize the Phillips West neighborhood.”
The Harrington Mansion and Events Center purchase, which includes the historic mansion, carriage house, modern events center, and 100 parking spaces, encompassing 1.66 acres at 2540 Park Avenue. The mansion and carriage house consist of 30,000 square feet, and the event center has 54,000 square feet. The purchase significantly increases the size of Saint Mary’s campus footprint on Park Avenue.
The purchase price of the properties is $2.75 million. A $2 million gift from an anonymous donor made the purchase possible for Saint Mary’s. Saint Mary’s will begin a campaign to raise funds for renovations of the buildings.
“We are grateful to the donor for enabling us to make this purchase,” said Brother William. “We are proud to become a part of the rich history of the Harrington Mansion. Saint Mary’s University intends to preserve that history while making the property highly functional for today’s learners and guests.”
The mansion and carriage house will be used for online learning opportunities, office space, gatherings of alumni and friends, and performing and visual arts space. The center will be used for university events and will continue to be available for public rental. The space is ideal for meetings, corporate functions, and receptions.
Harrington Mansion history
The Harrington Mansion was designated historic by the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission in 1988. This designation protects the external integrity of the historic property while allowing Saint Mary’s to make modern internal renovations.

Students in Dr. Janet Heukeshoven’s First-Year Seminar class made more than 20 children’s tie blankets as their Lasallian community service project. The class is the Saint Teresa Leadership and Service Institute section. The blankets were given to families with young children who asked for help through the Saint Mary’s University Gifts for Winona program. These blankets will help make many children’s holidays warmer and happier.
Because of the generosity of the late Joseph C. Page, Saint Mary’s was able to purchase and install a new acoustic shell system for the Page Theatre this summer.
The steel shell, specifically designed and engineered for the SMU theatre, blends in with the architecture, and is surrounded by a high-pressure oak laminate. It stands 25 feet high by 44 feet wide and features two flying clouds with build-in lighting.
“This new shell will improve the quality of sound in our 455-seat Page Theatre,” said Michael Charron, dean of the School of the Arts and chair of the Minnesota Arts Board. “This benefits our own performers, but also allows the university to host a larger variety of musical venues. Winona has become a destination for quality arts programming, and we’re excited to be able to offer another location for performers to consider, thereby increasing arts opportunities in our community.”
An acoustic shell, funded by an estate gift in excess of $50,000 was part of the Joseph C. Page Revocable Trust Agreement. Page, a lifelong Winona resident and long-time Winona district court clerk, passed away in 1985, leaving an estate valued at $1.5 million and an estate plan that included a bequest to Saint Mary’s. In addition to his many philanthropic gifts at the time of his death, Page established a trust that paid all net income to his long-time deputy clerk during her lifetime. Upon her death in late 2009, the remainder was distributed to Saint Mary’s.
Members of the Volunteer Committee Laurie Haase, Coral Henthorne and Tami Lubinski presented Brother Edward Siderewicz with a check for $1,500 for the First-Generation Initiative. This money has been raised through Jeans for a Cause and Let's Do Lunch fundraisers throughout the year.

A hotdog fundraiser on the Twin Cities campus raised money for San miguel students.
Twin Cities campus students, faculty and staff generously donated and stopped by at the first Dog Days of Summer Event, sponsored by the Campus Spirituality Team, held Wednesday, July 30, in the LaSalle Hall parking lot.
The fundraiser, coordinated by Melissa St. Aubin, was a success as CST members dished up hot dogs, snow cones and nachos to hungry students, faculty and staff to benefit San Miguel Middle School. Sister Mary Willette, principal; Ben Murray, president; and Bill Coughlan, board member and volunteer, stopped in to personally thank the team, staff and visitors, and to sample the tasty fare, as the pictures reveal.
San Miguel students are in need of back-to-school supplies, so the donations will be especially appreciated at this time of year. Val Fitzgerald won the Barnes & Noble gift card.
An anonymous donor has given $2 million to Saint Mary’s. The largest gift ever received by its Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs will fund a major new Twin Cities speaker series and endowed scholarships for adult, non-traditional students.
The annual speaker series — featuring renowned guest speakers — will help raise visibility for the entire university in the Twin Cities, a most important market for both undergraduate and graduate programs.
