Halloween Fun Night draws more than 500 to Saint Mary’s

Pint-sized ghouls, princesses and superheros covered the campus Monday night as more than 500 people participated in Saint Mary’s Halloween Fun Night. This free, safe and fun event was sponsored by the Office of Residence life. Thanks go to the many volunteers who made the event such a success. Elementary and preschool children from the Winona area are invited to attend the 14th annual Saint Mary’s, Halloween Fun Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27.

Participants should stop at the guard booth at the main entrance of the Winona campus for directions on where to park.

Young trick-or-treaters should start out the evening at the Hall of Fame Room, located in the Toner Student Center, where tattoos and stickers, a coloring station, and other fun games will be offered, and the Cardinal mascot will greet pint-sized ghosts and goblins.

From there, Saint Mary’s students will lead groups of trick-or-treaters through the residence halls of the university, where they can go door to door for candy. Last year more than 750 youth participated in this free, safe and fun event, sponsored by the Office of Residence Life.

Saint Mary’s wins award in Goodview Days Parade

As part of our community visibility efforts, SMU participated in the Goodview Days Parade Sunday, Aug. 18. Thanks in no small part to the large number of resident assistants who participated — and their high energy — Saint Mary’s took home the “Committee Award” plaque from the parade.

Residence Life staff visits sister Lasallian institution

As part of the annual hall director training, the professional staff in the Office of Residence Life went on retreat at Lasalle Manor in Plano, Ill., to focus on developing a vibrant residential experience for their residents and to immerse themselves in the work of student affairs at a Lasallian Catholic college.

To assist in this training, they visited Lewis University where they networked and shared insights into best practices with colleagues in residence life at Lewis. They toured the residence halls and had a training session with the Office of Residence Life staff at Lewis, discussing residence life at Lasallian colleges and universities. The SMSU Residence Life staff hopes to offer the same opportunity to their Lewis colleagues.

Boxes and Walls event tears down stereotypes

On Thursday, Feb. 7, Saint Mary’s hosted the first ever Boxes and Walls event, an interactive diversity program sponsored by the Office of Residence Life and the Wellness Center.
 
The program can best be described as a ‘haunted house’ type experience.  Instead of encountering ghosts and goblins, each participant was led on a tour through four rooms where they were faced with various areas of diversity and oppression. The goal of the program was to educate on stereotypes while thinking outside the box in order to tear down the walls that life perspectives might have us in.

This year, there were four rooms. The first room offered different activities on a range of physical and learning disabilities, including maneuvering a wheelchair, reading paragraphs simulating dyslexia, and hands-on instruction in using a walking stick to get around campus from Kelsi Watters, current first-year student.  A second room offered a star activity simulating the coming out process and acceptance levels one might encounter. The third room offered a first-hand experience in being a non-native language learner in the classroom. The fourth room brought awareness to the differing financial backgrounds of our student population.

Over 100 students went through the four rooms, and the event concluded with a brief conversation about the experience.  Volunteers included 10 professional staff members and over 25 student volunteers as actors and tour guides.  Thank you to all who volunteered their time and energy in creating this program. Look forward to the event again next year.

A fun new video, created by resident assistant Riley Sinn, showcases this year’s “Move-In Weekend” and its success. It also highlights information for families coming to campus next year about the move-in process at Saint Mary’s.

The Trick-or-Treating event held on Monday, Oct. 25, sponsored by Residence Life, welcomed more than 750 trick-or-treaters, once again a record attendance. Children were led through six campus residence halls by resident assistants and student volunteers. While waiting for tours, community members were welcome to participate in various Halloween themed activities and games in the Hall of Fame Room. The Office of Residence Life would like to extend a special thank you to all who supported this event with donations.
