Row, Ride, Run to raise money for SOUL participants

The annual Saint Mary’s “Row, Ride, Run Triathlon” will take place on Saturday, April 27, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Lake Lodge in Winona and finishing on SMU’s Winona campus. About 100 athletes from throughout the Midwest are expected to register for the race.

Participants will canoe or kayak a 2.5-mile loop around Lake Winona, then bike 14 miles from Lake Winona to the SMU campus. Once on campus, racers will run 3.1 miles through the bluffs surrounding the university. Proceeds assist Serving Others United in Love (SOUL). Through SOUL, students are able to connect with diverse communities by participating in national and international service trips.

Registration is $35 per individual or $70 per team. Teams can be made up of two, three or four members. The deadline to register is Saturday, April 20, and racers must provide their own canoes or kayaks.

Awards will be presented to the top three fastest individuals and the top finishing team.
Participants must be 10 or older to row or run and 15 or older to bike.

Faculty/staff SOUL trip May 16-18

The next faculty, staff and administration SOUL trip is scheduled for May 16-18 at San Miguel schools in Chicago. All employees are eligible if approved through immediate supervisor. All statements of interest are due to Chris McClead, cmcclead@smumn.edu, or Box 42 by today, May 6.

Faculty, staff attend second SOUL trip

All Saint Mary’s faculty, staff and administration were invited to take part in the most recent SOUL trip, organized through Campus Ministry, Jan. 12-14.

Trip leader Joe Tadie and attendees Peggy Ebert, Peg Johnson, Terrie Lueck, Janelle Ansel, Janneke Quick and Angel Weisbrod traveled to the San Miguel schools in Chicago, where they toured classrooms and tutored children from both the Back of the Yards Campus and the Gary Comer Campus.

The purpose of the trip was to ultimately build connections between different cultures, while enriching and energizing the lives of both the employee and student participants. The attendees also learned about the ever-changing student population, so that they may better serve the students at Saint Mary’s and better promote the Lasallian Catholic mission.

The first SMU employee SOUL trip was held in May 2010. Organizers decided to extend this opportunity of service — originally only offered to students — to other members of the Saint Mary’s community.

Faculty and staff completed a SOUL trip to Chicago May 12-14. The trip engaged participants with the San Miguel schools in Chicago. Attending were: Denise Hamernik and Adrianne Olson of Communication and Marketing; Dominic Lawrence of Development; Dr. Joe Tadie, Philosophy; and Dr. Casey Finnerty, Chemistry.

The trip gave participants a direct experience with the mission and people of the San Miguel schools — to witness, to listen, and to serve “together and by association.” At the same time, such a visit demonstrates to the San Miguel communities a sincere commitment to understanding and providing access and support for their students when it comes time for them to attend college.

Students complete service trip to Guatemala

Nine Saint Mary’s students, joined by Chris McClead, director of SMU’s Campus Ministry, completed a Serving One Another United with Love (SOUL) trip to Guatemala May 9-19.

The students, including Abby Voigt, Allison Stephens, Shannon Nelson, Rachel Elbert, John Speedling, Kelly Holt, Diana Lundeen, Ellen Bina and Emily DeWitt, traveled to Antigua, Huehuetenago and San Lucas Toliman to see how some Guatemalans live from day to day.

This trip was intended to ignite a flame on the Winona campus for the life and work of Brother James Miller, a 1966 Saint Mary’s alumnus who was killed while serving in Guatemala in 1982. Brother James has been designated a “Servant of God” and is being considered for sainthood.
The trip’s objectives were:

• To inspire students to live a life dedicated to others by visiting the Brother James Miller House, the school for the indigenous in Huehuetenango, and reflect on how their lives might also serve the common good.

• To provide students with an opportunity to see various non-profit organizations serving the marginalized of Guatemala.

• To have students connect to the Lasallian family and witness the Lasallian mission specifically with the communities of Antigua and Huehuetenango.

Social justice issues encountered included: global solidarity, poverty, education, immigration, advocacy, fair wages, and economic policies in a global market.

Faculty, staff SOUL trip planned for May 12-14

Faculty and staff are invited to consider going on a SOUL trip to Chicago for staff, faculty, and administration May 12-14/15.

SOUL trips have proven to be one of the most exciting ways this university involves students in the university’s Lasallian Catholic mission. The aim of this SOUL trip is to provide such an opportunity for faculty, staff, and administration from the Winona campus. The trip will engage participants with the San Miguel schools in Chicago from Wednesday, May 12, to Friday, May 14 (or Saturday, May 15, depending on the consensus of the group, once it is formed). At this time, the trip is limited to 10 participants.

The trip will give participants a direct experience with the mission and people of the San Miguel schools — to witness, to listen, and to serve “together and by association.” At the same time, such a visit demonstrates to the San Miguel communities a sincere commitment to understanding and providing access and support for their students when it comes time for them to attend college.

The main objectives of this SOUL trip are to:
• build personal connections across different cultures that are mutually enriching and energizing;
• allow faculty and staff to experience the SOUL program through a 3-day commitment;
• develop understanding of the core themes of our Lasallian Catholic mission;
• provide a quality service-learning experience and witness to students and the whole campus community the participants’ commitments to our shared Lasallian mission.

Members of the staff, faculty, and administration who would like to participate are asked to register by sending a brief (one page) explanation of their interest to Joe Tadie at jtadie@smumn.edu by 4 p.m. on Monday, May 3. SOUL Guatemala 2010 trip to follow in Brother James’ steps

Chris McClead will lead nine students (Abby Voigt, Allison Stephens, Shannon Nelson, Rachel Elbert, John Speedling, Kelly Holt, Diana Lundeen, Ellen Bina and Emily DeWitt) on a SOUL trip to Guatemala May 9-19.

The group will travel to Antigua, Huehuetenago and San Lucas Toliman to allow students to see how some Guatemalans live from day to day. The services performed will be the work of listening ears and open hearts. This trip is intended to ignite a flame on the Winona campus for the life and work of Brother James Miller.

Saint Mary’s to host fourth Row, Ride, Run Triathlon

The fourth Saint Mary’s “Row, Ride, Run Triathlon” will take place on Saturday, April 24, at 9 a.m.; check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. on the west end of Lake Winona.

Participants will canoe or kayak a 2.5-mile loop around Lake Winona, then bike 14 miles from Lake Winona to the SMU campus. Once on campus, racers will run 3.1 miles through the bluffs surrounding the university.

Proceeds assist Serving Others United in Love (SOUL), a program of SMU’s Office of Campus Ministry. Through SOUL, members of the Saint Mary’s community participate in national and international service trips.

Racers are responsible for bringing their own bikes, and are required to wear helmets for the bicycling leg of the event. Canoeists and kayakers are required to wear life jackets; a limited number of canoes and kayaks are available to rent for a suggested donation of $5.
