Saint Mary’s invites community to submit ‘to-do’ lists for ‘Make a Difference Day’

In recognition of national “Make a Difference Day,” Saint Mary’s University’s Volunteer Mentors group is inviting Winona residents and nonprofit agencies to submit requests for service.

The university hopes to get as many students as possible out into the community between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Oct. 27. Students are willing to help individuals and organizations with anything from painting to yard work.

Saint Mary’s will supply the workers, if you supply the materials needed (paint, brushes, rakes, tools, etc.).

“Make a Difference Day” is the most encompassing national day of helping others, a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Created by USA WEEKEND magazine, this annual event takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. For the fifth year, SMU is proud to join the millions of people throughout the nation who are participating.

MCA to receive support from the State Arts Board

The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts was once again selected to receive grant funding from the Minnesota State Arts Board.

For the 2013 fiscal year, MCA has been awarded funding in the form of an operating support grant allowing the organization to continue to provide arts-based learning opportunities and programming to people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds in Southeast Minnesota.

In 2010 and 2011 MCA was awarded funding through the State Arts Board’s Community Arts Schools and Conservatories grant division, and for the 2011-2012 year MCA was awarded formulary and merit-based funding for operating support. The consistent funding support by the Minnesota State Arts Board acknowledges MCA as a leader in community arts education for the state of Minnesota.

The Minnesota State Arts Board funding will help support and expand MCA’s current programming in dance, music, visual art, and theatre for children and youth. Furthermore, the grant will allow MCA to venture into new community outreach projects, expand its visual art and theatre divisions, grow the adult arts wellness program, and remain fiscally responsible with balanced budgets.

In 2012 MCA employed 31 teaching artists, served 1,032 local children/youth, 108 adult students, and over 3,500 people attended dance and music performances and events produced by MCA.

Depression Screening Oct. 2

Saint Mary’s will participate in National Depression Screening Day on Tuesday, Oct. 2.   From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., students are invited to the Wellness Center to fill out a short questionnaire and meet briefly with a counselor to assess symptoms of mood disorders (depression, anxiety, bipolar). Untreated mood symptoms can lead to missed classes, poor performance, social isolation, and other missed opportunities in students’ college careers.  Understanding the signs and symptoms of mood issues can assist students to seek treatment that will promote their well-being and enable them to gain maximum benefit from their investment in themselves and a SMU education.

Centennial Chicago event planned for Sept. 22

The Oldie Moldie All-Stars

On Sept. 22, a signature event is planned to bring together the large community of alumni and friends in the Chicago area. All Saint Mary's and College of Saint Teresa alumni, parents, benefactors, employees and friends are invited to Millennium Park for an evening of food and festivities.

Father Andrew C. Fabian, professor of philosophy, will be acknowledged for dedicating more than 48 years of service to the university as he will be awarded the President’s Medal for Outstanding Merit during this event. Dr. John Paulson, Eric Heukeshoven, and The Oldie Moldies are also scheduled to perform.

Additional weekend activities include a Cubs game Friday, alumni boat cruises and a special Mass at St. Peter’s Church Saturday.

Tibetan monks plan closing ceremony today

The Tibetan Monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery have created a sand mandala in the Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries, all week. Their residency will end with a closing ceremony at 11:45 a.m. today, Friday, Sept. 21.

In this sacred tradition, intricate and artistic designs are created from colored sand and then ritualistically destroyed to symbolize the Buddhist doctrinal belief in the impermanent nature of material life.

During the closing ceremony, the public is invited to join the Tibetan Monks in ceremoniously releasing the sand used from the mandala into Gilmore Creek.

Twenty-one photographs from the Tibet Image Bank, London will be on display through Monday, Sept. 24. The photo show, “Tibet: Magical Land of Spiritual Wonders,” will be on display at the Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Events being held in the gallery are free and open to the public.

‘Let Us Remember’ Centennial performance to debut Oct. 4-6

In honor of Saint Mary’s University’s Centennial, a special program celebrating the history, mission and legacy of Saint Mary’s will be presented. “Let Us Remember” — a performed narrative that includes many of the voices from Saint Mary’s rich history — will incorporate theatre, music, visual art and dance into one inspiring program.

Experience SMU’s 100-year journey through word, music and photographs during performances scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 4-6. A matinee will begin at 2 p.m. Oct. 6.  “Let Us Remember” was written and will be directed by 1979 Saint Mary’s alumnus and Dean of the School of the Arts Michael Charron.

The program features newly commissioned music scores by Dr. Patrick O’Shea, director of choirs, and Eric Heukeshoven, director of jazz, as performed by the SMU Concert Band and SMU Choirs.

Centennial timeline unveiling will be Oct. 5

In honor of its Centennial year, Saint Mary’s University commissioned Brother Roderick Robertson, FSC, professor of art and design, to complete a timeline wall mural of the university’s history.

The timeline will be unveiled during a public reception Friday, Oct. 5, at the Toner Student Center. The time is yet to be determined. The timeline will also be installed on the Twin Cities campus.

Brother Roderick has taught art and design at Saint Mary’s for 35 years. This timeline depicts the first century of Saint Mary’s. Fittingly, the artist wanted to tell the university’s story symbolically with 100 photographs.

The piece is divided into four segments or panels. The first panel illustrates the founding and early years of the university under the direction of the Diocese of Winona. The second panel illustrates the arrival of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the beginning of the Lasallian character of the school. The third panel depicts the arrival of women on campus and how becoming co-educational influenced and changed the nature of the institution. The fourth panel presents the changes that occurred as the college became a university including the expansion of graduate and international programming. The end of the mural speaks to the future of Saint Mary’s University.

The rich and colorful history includes many of the faces from Saint Mary’s University who have shaped its heritage and transformed the school’s educational experience.

The piece includes the first photograph ever taken of Saint Mary’s College, taken by Florence Curran and donated by her grandson Rob Linden of Winona. Curran captured the school’s cornerstone laying in 1912.

The SMU class of 2011 helped fund the project through their senior class gift.

Saint Mary's invites public to Fall Frolic Oct. 6

The public is invited to participate in the 25th Fall Frolic 5K fun run/walk on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Registration will run from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in the Toner Student Center with the race beginning at 10 a.m. The $8 cost includes a T-shirt.

The annual event is free to SMU students, faculty and staff, but is open to the community as well. Typically close to 500 people participate; competitors of all levels (including walkers) are welcome.

Family Weekend runs Oct. 5-7 and includes a full slate of activities for families of students and the SMU community — including special Centennial arts debuts in honor of the university’s 100th anniversary. In previous years, as many as 1,000 visitors have come onto campus for Family Weekend music and theatre events, sporting events, the Fall Frolic, and other games and activities.

Lawing to display new work Sept. 27-Nov. 4

Preston Lawing, SMU Art and Design faculty member, will display new work during the next Saint Mary’s University art exhibit.

In “Cabinets of Curiosities,” Lawing will display sculptures, prints, drawings and an installation/recreation of a “hoarder’s” apartment.

The show will run Sept. 27 through Nov. 4 at the Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries, located in the Toner Student Center. The galleries will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and all exhibits are free and open to the public.

A gallery reception is scheduled for 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27.

Benefit 5K run/walk to assist Sabrina Larson Bushlack

Sabrina Larson Bushlack, right, recently joined the SMU Volleyball team for a picture.

“Strong is the New Beautiful,” a benefit 5K run/walk for SMU senior volleyball player Sabrina Larson Bushlack, is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21. The race will start at the Toner Student Center and run through the bluffs of campus.

Bushlack was critically injured in a car accident July 16 and appreciates prayers and financial support as she recovers from a severe brain injury.

A minimum $10 donation will include a T-shirt, and all donations are welcome. Mail donations to Jenna Ness at Campus Box 62; make checks payable to Saint Mary’s University. Registration will be accepted on race day.

Packets can be picked up Friday, Oct. 19, from 7 to 8 p.m. or 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in the gym.

Hefel presents workshop on strategic planning

On Friday, Sept. 7, Jeff Hefel, professor of business administration, presented a workshop on “Strategic Planning” to the Rochester, Minn., Chapter of the National Association of Church Business Administrators.

Outstanding English papers awarded

The English Department recently presented the award for outstanding paper of the 2011-2012 academic year. Two students tied for the award: Kate Larson for “That Which We Are: Modernist Undertones in Tennyson’s  ‘Ulysses’ ” and Mike Wolter for “Kafka’s ‘A Starvation Artist.’ ” Each student received a gift card to the book store.

Congratulations to Miss Winona Serica Rowley

Serica Rowley, a senior at SMU, was crowned  Miss Winona last week. Her major is social science education, and she performed an Irish dance to “Game of Thrones.”

Rowley’s platform is “From Me to We: Moving Others to Volunteer.” She plans to speak to organizations and groups about the importance of volunteering.

Saint Mary’s moves up in U.S. News ranking

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota continues to move up in the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings of best colleges and universities.

Saint Mary’s is ranked No. 174 in the National Universities category of the U.S. News Best Colleges 2013 guidebook, moving up three slots from No. 177 in the 2012 guide. The ranking of more than 1,500 schools is available online at www.usnews.com.

“We’re elated that Saint Mary’s is being nationally recognized for its excellent educational experience,” said Brother William. “We’re a top-tier university that is meeting the needs and exceeding the expectations of students at every level, from our undergraduate students to our doctoral students.”

U.S. News placed Saint Mary’s in the first tier of the “National Universities” category. This grouping includes schools that offer a wide range of undergraduate majors, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees. This is the sixth year Saint Mary’s is ranked in this category.

Taking top honors in the “National Universities” ranking are Harvard University, Princeton University, Yale University and Columbia University. Saint Mary’s is one of only three public or private schools in Minnesota in this category.

Along with the “National Universities” category, the other main U.S. News institutional groupings include “National Liberal Arts Colleges,” “Regional Universities,” and “Regional Colleges.”

Alumni and student-athletes are honored Sept. 7

Kevin Gannon (Roselle, Ill.) and Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) enjoyed banner years during the 2011-12 academic year, capping off their stellar seasons by being named Saint Mary’s Outstanding Male and Female Athletes during the Cardinal ‘M’ Club Sports Hall of Fame and awards ceremony Friday evening.

Regina Quandt (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.) meanwhile, were named SMU’s Outstanding Male and Female Scholar Athletes.

Friday’s ceremony also included the induction of three new members into the SMU Sports Hall of Fame, as the Cardinal ‘M’ Club, in association with the Saint Mary's Alumni Office, welcomed the Class of 2012: Chris Kendall ’79 (baseball), Anne Erickson ’89 (women’s soccer) and Alex Kugel ’99 (men’s soccer).

Along with Friday’s awards ceremony, ‘M’ Club Weekend included a Saturday golf outing,  with more than 100 golfers at Cedar Valley Golf Course for an afternoon of fun and camaraderie. The weekend’s festivities concluded on Sunday, with several teams hosting alumni games.

The Cardinal ‘M’ Club fosters and strengthens relationships between SMU and its alumni, families and friends. Gifts to the Cardinal ‘M’ Club help provide a quality experience for student-athletes. The Cardinal ‘M’ Club has been instrumental in building strong traditions and impacting athletics at Saint Mary’s.

Young Alumni Weekend a great success

Last weekend, Sept. 7-9, nearly 150 young alumni returned to the Winona campus to participate in weekend events. Alumni attended a welcome gathering with Brother William and faculty/staff and enjoyed entertainment from students and  young alumni  on the Plaza. They also challenged themselves on the ropes course and disc golf course, participated in the Cardinal Dash, and more.

Speaker to address role of social media in health care

A Gundersen Lutheran Health System representative will discuss the use of social media in health care marketing on Thursday, Sept. 20.

Marna Holley, manager of digital marketing at Gundersen Lutheran, will begin her presentation at 7 p.m. in Salvi Lecture Hall, located in Saint Mary’s Hall.

Holley, who began her communications career in print journalism, has held a variety of positions at Gundersen Lutheran for more than 20 years, and headed the organization’s social-media operations since they began about two years ago. She’ll discuss some of the ways Gundersen Lutheran has used Facebook, Twitter and other social media, highlighting what’s worked well and what hasn’t been as effective.

The Saint Teresa Leadership Institute’s  Leadership Workshop Series opens on Monday, Sept. 17. Leadership 101 introduces essential and time-tested qualities necessary for true leadership. Beth Forkner Moe, United Way of Greater Winona, will guide attendees through the practical steps proposed in John Maxwell’s “Leadership 101.” Participants receive a participation certificate for their portfolios. Seebach receives Girl Scout volunteer award

Beth Seebach, Psychology Department, was awarded the Volunteer of Excellence award from Girl Scouts of Wisconsin, Badgerland Council on Sept. 8.  The award “recognizes volunteers who have contributed outstanding service while partnering directly with girls in any pathway to implement the Girl Scout Leadership Experience through use of the National Program Portfolio, or who have contributed outstanding service in support of the council’s mission delivery to girl and adult members.”

Sympathy to Reed family

John Andrés Puche Reed, 16, son of Dr.  John  (modern/classical languages) and Alicia Reed, died Tuesday, Sept. 11.

Three to be inducted to Sports Hall of Fame Sept. 7

The Saint Mary’s Cardinal ‘M’ Club, in association with the Alumni Office, will induct three members into the SMU Sports Hall of Fame during Cardinal ‘M’ Club Weekend Friday through  Sunday, Sept. 7-9.

The 2012 Hall of Fame induction ceremony will honor former student-athletes from three decades — Chris Kendall ’79, M’95, Anne Erickson ’89 and Alex Kugel ’99.

The trio will be honored during an awards ceremony on Friday, Sept. 7. Along with the induction of this year’s Hall of Fame class, Friday’s ceremony will also honor the 2011-12 student-athlete postseason award-winners, as well as announce the 2011-12 Outstanding Male and Female Athletes, and Outstanding Scholar Athletes.

Saint Mary’s plans 4th annual Young Alumni Weekend

Saint Mary’s graduates from the past decade have been invited back to campus for Young Alumni Reunion Weekend, Sept. 7-9.

Over 150 alumni are expected to attend the full weekend of events which will include a Friday faculty and staff social and Saturday’s gathering at Mulligan’s, ropes course activities, barbecue with live music on the Plaza, disc golfing and Cardinal Dash 5K. The weekend also coincides with Cardinal ‘M’ Club Weekend, giving SMU alumni opportunities to cheer on Cardinal athletics.

Speaker to discuss Holocaust in literature Sept. 13

A public presentation titled, “The Holocaust and the ‘Subject’ of Fiction,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13.

The guest speaker is Dr. Emily Budick. Dr. Budick is the Ann and Joseph Edelman Chair in American Literature and Chair of the Program of American Studies at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, and Phyllis Greenberg Heideman and Richard D. Heideman Fellow with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Budick is researching the role of Holocaust fictions in grappling with the events of World War II. The lecture will deal with the ways in which Holocaust fictions frame the problem of subject position, forcing the reader to confront the ways in which even horrific historical events can become subjects of fantasy and projection.

The event will be held in the President’s Room, located in the Toner Student Center.

Dr. Budick will also speak to Saint Mary’s “Seminar in Holocaust Literature” students Thursday afternoon.

The presentation is made possible by the Campus Outreach Lecture Program of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, supported by the generosity of the Jerome A. Yavitz Charitable Foundation, Inc. and Arlyn S. and Stephen H. Cypen.

Michener publishes short story

Dr. Christian Michener’s (English, Lasallian Honors) short story, “The Glass Boys,” about youth working in early 20th-century glass works, has been published in the journal Alembic, published by Providence College.

One addition to the new playground and landscaping at the East Recreation Center is a labyrinth, designed by Monta May (Communication and Marketing). The community — including several SMU students — was invited to help build mosaic blocks that comprise the labyrinth.

The labyrinth, made from over 180 concrete blocks set into the ground and mosaiced with recycled glass and local stone, is a 25-foot permanent installation in the park. More than 60 adults and children participated in the three-day build.

A plaque with a brief explanation of labyrinths, mosaics and the project will be added in the near future. The pillar for the plaque will be covered with a mosaic depicting a Mississippi river scene. To see pictures, go to http://montagael.blogspot.com/search/label/labyrinth.

Art exhibition at Winona Public Library features Linda Egge

The public is invited to enjoy the oil paintings, photography, colored pencil drawings, sketches and painting on rattan trays Winona artist Linda Egge has created in her varied and interesting show. Three to be inducted to Sports Hall of Fame Sept. 7

The Saint Mary’s Cardinal ‘M’ Club, in association with the Alumni Office, will induct three members into the SMU Sports Hall of Fame during Cardinal ‘M’ Club Weekend Friday through Sunday, Sept. 7-9.

The 2012 Hall of Fame induction ceremony will honor former student-athletes from three decades — Chris Kendall ’79, M’95, Anne Erickson ’89 and Alex Kugel ’99.

The trio will be honored during an awards ceremony on Friday, Sept. 7. Along with the induction of this year’s Hall of Fame class, Friday’s ceremony will also honor the 2011-12 student-athlete postseason award-winners, as well as unveil the 2011-12 Outstanding Male and Female Athletes, and Outstanding Scholar Athletes.

Saint Mary’s plans fourth annual Young Alumni Weekend

Saint Mary’s graduates from the past decade have been invited back to campus for Young Alumni Reunion Weekend, Sept. 7-9.

Over 150 alumni are expected to attend the full weekend of events which will include a faculty and staff social, a young alumni gathering at Mulligan’s, ropes course activities, a barbecue with live music on the Plaza, disc golfing and the Cardinal Dash 5K. The weekend also coincides with Cardinal ‘M’ Club Weekend, giving SMU alumni opportunities to cheer on Cardinal athletics.

100 SMU students to volunteer in Winona community Saturday

In commemoration of the Centennial year, 100 students will volunteer in the Winona community from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 1.  Students will be serving the Winona Area Humane Society, Restored Blessings,  Winona Catholic Worker House, Salvation Army Thrift Store, East End Recreational Center, Habitat ReStore, and Habitat for Humanity.  They will also complete a creek cleanup near SMU and work on the trails near Holzinger Lodge.

The photo show, “Tibet: Magical Land of Spiritual Wonders” will be on display at the Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries, located in the Toner Student Center, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

The Tibetan Monks will create a sand mandala from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, through Friday, Sept. 21. In this sacred tradition, intricate and artistic designs are created from colored sand and then ritualistically destroyed to symbolize the Buddhist doctrinal belief in the impermanent nature of material life. The public is also invited to participate in a community sand painting during this period.

An opening ceremony will begin at 11:45 a.m. Sept. 17 and a closing ceremony will begin at 11:45 a.m. Sept. 21. During the closing ceremony, the public is invited to join the Tibetan Monks in ceremoniously releasing the sand used from the mandala into Gilmore Creek. Events being held in the gallery are free and open to the public.

SMU Page Series seeks designs for sand painting

The Page Series will host the Tibetan Monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery Sept. 17-21, including a public performance Sept. 20. During their week-long residency, the Tibetan Monks will create a sand mandala in the Toner Student Center. In this sacred tradition, intricate and artistic designs are created from colored sand and then ritualistically destroyed to symbolize the Buddhist doctrinal belief in the impermanent nature of material life.

In conjunction with these events, the community is invited to submit design ideas and participate in the construction of a community sand painting. The community will not create a mandala or any attempt at replication of this sacred art. Instead the images in this community sand painting should reflect strongly the local essence of the community and/or landscape. Here are some important elements to consider as you consider the design idea submission:

• The community sand painting will be constructed on a tabletop, similar to the one the monks will use. The design will not exceed 3 feet by 3 feet. Design entries should be on a smaller scale (10 inches by 10 inches is the recommended size). A color picture of the design will be displayed nearby so people would know where to place the appropriate colors. The Page Series will supply the colored sand and volunteers to assist with the process.

• The design should be simple, meaningful and easily recognized by the local community. The design can be a combination of shapes, images and words – but preferably with no intricate details.

• The design should be able to be viewed from all angles, without a defined top and bottom – so everyone who works on it or views it at any angle will still have a good seat.

• Many people will work to bring the design to fruition – young and old, artists with and without experience.

• All design proposals must be submitted in color. Color pencil is preferred, or a medium that does not allow for shading of colors, as this is not possible with the sand. Computer graphic design is acceptable as well.

• By submitting the design for the community sand painting, you agree to release all rights to use this image to the Performance Center at Saint Mary's University solely for the purpose of the community sand painting. Your design may be used in part or entirety in the spirit of collaborative community design.

Design submissions must be submitted to the Performance Center, attention Community Sand Painting Design Committee, no later than 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7.  Submit your entry electronically to tickets@smumn.edu or drop it off at the Performance Center Box Office between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Conservatory receives ‘Mayor’s Choice Award’

On Sunday, Aug. 19, students, parents, volunteers, and instructors of MCA participated in the annual Goodview Days Parade. MCA promoted its fall registration open house on Sept. 5, in addition to its upcoming auditions for “The Nutcracker” on Sept. 6. Energetic performers interacted with the crowd and accompanied a “Nutcracker”-themed float and received the “Mayor’s Choice Award.”

Volunteers needed for Dakota Gathering, Homecoming

The 9th annual Great Dakota Gathering and Homecoming (2012) will be held at Unity Park, East Lake Winona, Sept. 14-16. This year the event will commemorate the Dakota Conflict of 1862.

Volunteers are needed for the following areas:

Youth Education Day —  Set up the space, help the 35 presenters, and take some notes on the lessons: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday in two-hour shifts.

Information/T-shirt sales  — 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and  7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in two-hour shifts.

Serving of meals — Help set up, serve the meal, check buttons, work tables, assist elders and clean up; Saturday 7 to 9 a.m. and 4:30 to 7 p.m.; Sunday 7 to 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Coca Cola Stand —  9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

SMU improves ranking in Forbes ‘Top Colleges’

Forbes.com’s 2012 list of “America’s Top Colleges” ranks Saint Mary’s as No. 306 out of 650 of “The Best Public and Private Colleges and Universities — from the student's point of view.”

SMU is also listed by Forbes as No. 235 in “Private Colleges,” No. 117 in “Research Universities,” and No. 70 “In the Midwest.” These rankings are significantly higher than last year, when SMU ranked 418 overall, 326 in “Private Colleges,” 139 in “Research Universities” and No. 105 “In the Midwest.”

The annual list of “America's Best Colleges” ranks a select group of more than 650 undergraduate institutions — the top 20% of all undergraduate institutions — based on the quality of the education they provide, the experience of the students, and how much they achieve.

The annual ranking, which is assembled by the Washington, D.C.-based Center for College Affordability and Productivity, is based on schools’ performances in five categories: post-graduate success, student satisfaction, debt, four-year graduation rate, and competitive awards, according to Forbes.

Jim Bedtke, vice president for the College, said he is excited to see Saint Mary’s climb the Forbes “Top Colleges” list. “The Forbes listing is especially meaningful to us because it measures students’ satisfaction and opinion,” Bedtke said. “This study reaffirms that our students receive a quality education experience and are successful in their chosen careers. It also reflects that our students are able to graduate within four years and control their college tuition expenses.”

Wells Fargo fund to benefit Saint Mary’s accident victim

Senior Sabrina Larson Bushlack, 21, is slowly recovering after being critically injured in a car accident July 16 in Fort Wayne, Ind.

According to the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, Bushlack was injured after the taxi she was riding in was struck by a car that police said ran a red light.

Bushlack is a biochemistry major and three-year regular for the Cardinal volleyball team.

A fund has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank to help the Bushlack family with rising medical expenses. Donations may be made to any Wells Fargo Bank (including Wells Fargo at 875 34th Ave., Winona, MN 55987). Please indicate that the donation is for the benefit of Sabrina Bushlack in care of Jeff and Tricia Bushlack.

Alums join First-Generation students for baseball outing

Saint Mary’s First-Generation Scholars were treated to a game July 23 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago between the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins. John ’77 and Joanie CST’78 Domanico  sponsored a skybox for the cultivation event.

Attendees were treated to a special guest appearance by All-Star White Sox player Minnie Miñoso, the first African American in a White Sox jersey.  Miñoso talked about what it was like to play against Willie Mays and Joe DiMaggio. Rob ’76 and Kim CST’76 Figliulo joined the group in trying on Miñoso’s World Series rings.

MCA announces annual Concert on the Lawn

The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts will conduct its annual Concert on the Lawn at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, in front of the Valéncia Arts Center. The concert will include performances by students who have taken private lessons, and a fun-filled sing-a-long! Bring a blanket, a chair, a picnic, and your favorite song choice.

Sympathy to Neville family

Marion J. (Dannen) Neville, mother of Mark Neville, Development, died Sunday, Aug. 5, in Richardson, Texas. She was formerly from DeForest, Wis. The Saint Mary’s community extends its sympathy to Mark and his family.

‘Campus Notes’ goes weekly Aug. 24

“Campus Notes” will come out every Friday beginning Friday, Aug. 24. The deadline for each issue is noon the previous Wednesday.

Countdown to College welcomes 72 students

Saint Mary’s is conducting its third annual Countdown to College through Aug. 4. This two-week program for students from under-resourced communities is offered each summer for four years, beginning just after they complete eighth grade and continuing until they reach college age — helping to assure each student is prepared for a successful college experience.

The camp is free to student participants from San Miguel and Nativity middle schools and Cristo Rey and Lasallian high schools, their parents (who come the first weekend) and teachers from their schools, who co-teach with SMU instructors, and help prepare SMU instructors on how to effectively work with this growing population of students. SMU welcomed back 22 participants for the third time, 24 participants for the second time, and 26 new incoming ninth-graders. Each group stays on campus for two weeks.

This is one portion of the First-Generation Initiative, which helps students prepare and succeed at college.

Fund established at Wells Fargo for Saint Mary’s accident victim

Senior Sabrina Larson Bushlack, 21, of Mapleton, Minn., was critically injured in a car accident July 16 in Fort Wayne, Ind.

According to the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, Bushlack was injured after the taxi she was riding in was struck by a car that police said ran a red light.

Bushlack — a biochemistry major and three-year regular for the Cardinal volleyball team — remains under sedation because of swelling on her brain and is in intensive care at Lutheran Hospital, in Fort Wayne, Ind. Doctors are optimistic about her prognosis.

A fund has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank to help the Bushlack family with rising medical expenses — including flying Sabrina back to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Donations may be made by contacting any Wells Fargo Bank (including Wells Fargo at 875 34th Avenue, Winona, MN 55987) and indicating that the donation is for the benefit of Sabrina Bushlack.

A “Team Brina: Sabrina’s Biggest Fans” Facebook page has been set up for family and friends to share their thoughts and prayers. More than 1,200 members have joined in support of Bushlack.

“Our thoughts remain with Sabrina and her family during this difficult time,” said Brother William. “The entire Saint Mary’s community joins me in prayers for recovery and strength, and we look forward to the day when Sabrina is able to return to campus. She’s a very special student who is loved by many.”

APO to celebrate 45th reunion Aug. 3-5

In 1967, the Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity established the Sigma Theta chapter on the Winona campus. On the weekend of Aug. 3-5, the alumni brothers of the chapter will gather again to celebrate its 45th year. With over 330 members, the chapter has produced hundreds of business, professional and community leaders in the areas of law, medicine, finance, law enforcement, and entrepreneurship around the United States.

Based on the fraternity principles of leadership, friendship, and service, the Sigma Theta chapter will once again gather to celebrate its brotherhood and honor its members that had an important and meaningful impact on the development of Saint Mary's.

Tegrity updates to include new features

Some of the new features include:

    • The ability to create recordings from Android and iOS devices

    • Clicking the Tegrity Classes link within Blackboard while on a mobile device will now launch the Tegrity mobile app

    • Kindle Fire support

    • Improved Mac OSX recorder

This will result in two Tegrity outages. The first outage will be the longest and will occur starting July 30 at 8 p.m. until noon on July 31. A second phase of this upgrade will occur during the early morning hours of Aug. 13.

Instructors will still be able to create recordings by launching the recorder from the system tray; however they will not upload immediately. Please contact the HelpDesk at Ext. 7800 if you plan on creating recordings during either of these upgrades.

Congratulations to Putz, Windley-Daoust families

Jason Putz (maintenance) and his wife Jaimie had a son, Daniel John, on Sunday, July 15. 

Susan Windley-Daoust (Theology) and her husband Jerry adopted a 5-year-old boy on June 12 named Alexander Joseph.

Brother Finbar’s work on display at SMU gallery

“The Eye & Hand of the Craftsman — The life work of Finbar McMullen, FSC” is on display through Aug. 19 in the Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries, Toner Student Center. Brother Finbar, a retired educator, 1946 SMU alum and Christian Brother for 70 years, is showing a variety of his hand-crafted art and mechanical inventions. The exhibit — free and open to the public — is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Homecoming, Centennial launch draw more than 400

More than 400 alumni returned to their alma mater for Homecoming festivities June 22-24.  Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to connect with fellow alumni and classmates through various gatherings throughout the weekend. The university officially launched its Centennial year during the Cornerstone Commemoration event on Saturday. Hundreds of distinguished guests and friends were on hand to mark the occasion of the laying of the cornerstone a century ago.

GeoSpatial to help with State Water Trails Day

Saint Mary’s GeoSpatial Services is playing an important role in State Water Trails Day Saturday, July 14. This event is intended to raise awareness of the 33 State Water Trails managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for canoeing, kayaking, boating and camping.

Attendees to the invite-only event are expected to include the DNR commissioner, several Minnesota Senators, local officials and community leaders, state advisors to the DNR Trails Road, a variety of media and possibly the governor.

The event will begin with a gathering and short presentation at the Prairie Island park pavilion, followed by a 2-4 mile canoe ride on the backwaters of the Mississippi River.

GSS will assist with hosting State Water Trails Day by providing mapping and volunteer assistance, and Saint Mary’s will be recognized for its role during the presentation.

Minnesota Twins Alumni Outing is Sunday

Saint Mary’s has secured the Budweiser Roof Deck — the ultimate spot for a Minnesota Twins outdoor experience — for Sunday, July 15. The entire space is reserved just for SMU alumni and friends to dine, watch the game and enjoy each other’s company. Tickets for reserved seating are now sold out, but you can still join us at the game.

Budweiser Roof Deck standing-room only tickets are now available for $30. Roof Deck experience includes a great view from left field, room to roam, a wonderful place to socialize, as well as free food! The SMU Pre-Game Social will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Budweiser Roof Deck in Target Field; the game begins at 1 p.m. The buffet lunch, included in the ticket price, will be available from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.  Snacks and a cash bar will be available throughout the game. MCA Chamber Music Camp is July 23-27

The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts will host a Chamber Music Camp from July 23-27. All instrumentalists — woodwinds, brass and strings — are invited. Participants should be entering grades six through 10 in the fall. Scholarships are available.

Instructors will include Ryan Ballanger, Dustin Moburg, Mandy Moburg and Rachael Ryan. The featured guest artist will be Dave Gudmastad from Cotter. An informal recital is scheduled for 4 p.m. July 27.

Crozier to present on SMU history, July 18

Professor Emeritus and university archivist Dr. Bill Crozier will make a presentation on Saint Mary’s history Wednesday, July 18 at the Winona County History Center. Dr. Crozier will discuss “From Terrace Heights to the World: Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota 1912-2012” at the Center’s lunchtime learning series, beginning at 12:05 p.m.

MCA presents the Summer Dance Intensive Showcase

The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts will present a dance showcase 7 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at the Valéncia Arts Center Academy Theatre, 1164 West 10th St.

The showcase, which is free and open to the public, features works that the students from the MCA 2012 Summer Dance Intensive have learned in the two-week dance camp. A variety of dance forms will be presented, including classical and contemporary ballet, jazz, flamenco, and modern dance. The works were choreographed by MCA guest artists Dustyn Martincich, Stephanie Milling, Jeffrey Peterson, and Tammy Schmidt.

In addition to learning showcase pieces, students have been participating in comprehensive dance training, including technique and theory classes. Class studies have included ballet, pointe, variations, pas de deux, repertory, jazz, hip hop, rhythm tap, modern, musical theatre dance, piyo, choreography, and improvisation.

Intermediate and advanced students from Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin, ranging in ages from 12 to 18, were selected for the program by audition.

Ice cream social raises $317

Thursday’s ice cream social, hosted by the Volunteer Committee, raised $317 for students at CTIE in Nairobi. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Thanks for a great weekend; campus luncheon Friday

The Centennial Celebration Committee invites the campus community to a complimentary luncheon this Friday (June 29), from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the pavilion next to the baseball field. The luncheon is in appreciation of the “incredible and tireless efforts” by many people preparing for and running last weekend’s successful Homecoming and Centennial events. Rubio’s Mexican Restaurant will provide Friday’s fare.

Library staff presents session on ‘Chat & Chow & Web 2.0’

On June 24, Fitzgerald Library staff presented a poster session titled “Chat, Chow & Web 2.0: Channeling Technology to Create Alliances” at the American Library Association (ALA) annual conference in Anaheim, Calif. The session was proposed by Carol Daul-Elhindi, instructional services librarian, and Ruth Ann Torstenson LeMasters, reference librarian and web developer, and presented in Anaheim by Daul-Elhindi and Laura Oanes, library director. The American Library Association is the oldest and largest library association in the world. Its annual convention is attended by 25,000 U.S. and international librarians, library supporters, educators, writers, publishers, Friends of Libraries, trustees and special guests.

Former Olympic soccer coach works with Winona youth

Winona-area girl soccer players scored some high-level coaching from Tony DiCicco, former head coach of the U.S. women’s national and Olympic soccer teams. DiCicco coached a portion of the SoccerPlus camp, held June 16-22 on the Saint Mary’s University campus. The CEO and founder of SoccerPlus, DiCicco also brought in soccer coaches with international experience to work with the residential campers. He also worked with a group of Winona Youth Soccer Association girls on campus.

DiCicco is the former head coach of the U.S. women’s national and Olympic soccer teams and the head coach of the U.S. U20 women’s national team. In 2008, he coached the U.S. to the FIFA U20 World Cup championship in Chile. He also led the full national team to the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup championship. And in 1996, he coached the U.S. women’s Olympic team to the first-ever gold medal in women’s soccer. DiCicco plans to return to Winona next year to continue training young Winona-area athletes.

MCA announces July programs

The Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts offers year-round programming in dance, music, visual art, and theatre. Community classes, lessons, workshops and camps are offered for ages 3 to adult at the Valéncia Arts Center, 1164 West 10th St.

With the 2012 summer session in full swing, a variety of classes are available for children and adults ranging from recreation classes to pre-professional training. Below are the July offerings, most of which conclude in free performance showcases.

NEW! Chamber Music Camp

For students entering grades 6-10 in the fall who play a woodwind, brass or orchestral string instrument. Tuition $100 (half-price for MCA private lesson students). Students will work on becoming better musicians by playing in a small ensemble setting with like instruments and will attend music classes to learn the basics of sight singing, theory, composition, improvisation and the Alexander Technique.

MCA wellness classes

All Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts dance/fitness class offerings are geared toward those 13 and up and will take place on Mondays in July: July 9, 16, 23, 30.

Clogging II

This class is designed for students with prior clogging experience and will focus on traditional folk dances.

Sympathy to Deb Nahrgang, Nancy Bachler

The Saint Mary’s community extends its sympathy to Deb Nahrgang (Marketing and Communication Office) and her family on the death of her mother, Harriett Benedett, on June 27. Visitation is Sunday, July 1, 4-8 p.m., Hoff Funeral Home in Lewiston. The funeral is Monday, July 2, 10 a.m., St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lewiston.
