Saint Mary’s business professors presented one-day workshops to local business leaders as part of the SGPP Journey into Leadership Workshop Series. Professor Jeffrey Hefel addressed workshop participants on the topic of “Difficult Conversations, Accountability and Human Resources” while Dr. Shelly McCallum presented on “Creating an Inspiring Culture.” Leaders from various local companies including Merchant’s Bank, Winona Health, Miller Ingenuity (formerly Miller Felpax Corporation), Family and Children Center, Home and Community Options, and Saint Mary’s University took part in the day-long sessions.
The Journey into Leadership Workshop Series is a six-workshop series offering leaders current insights into managing staff, creating and maintaining a positive organizational culture, fostering innovation and ethical decision making, enhancing the use of financial resources, and building leadership abilities. The last two workshops in the 2013 series will be offered in September (Creating an Innovative and Ethical Workplace) and in November (Financial Intelligence). The Regional Conference of the Christian Brothers USA-Toronto Region will be offering several Lasallian formation programs this summer. The Lasallian Social Justice Institute will be offered at two sites.
LSJI El Paso will be held from July 12-18 in El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico. LSJI El Paso focuses on the theme of “Global Economic Justice,” and includes several days of encounters on both sides of the border, followed by theological and sociological presentations at a retreat center. LSJI San Francisco will be held from August 2-8. LSJI San Francisco focuses on the theme of “Homelessness and Human Dignity,” and includes several days with individuals and agencies in the Tenderloin and Mission Districts of San Francisco, and is followed by theological and sociological presentations.
The numbers of participants are limited to 30 for LSJI El Paso and 20 for LSJI San Francisco, with only three places allocated from each of the six districts for San Francisco.

The Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies will be held from June 22-July 4 at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. The Buttimer Institute is completed in three consecutive, independent summers of study, each two weeks in duration. It is an intensive formation and education program that studies the life and work of Saint John Baptist de La Salle and the origins of the Lasallian educational mission. In Buttimer I (Year I), "The Founding Story," participants are introduced to a study of the life and times of De La Salle. Buttimer II examines De La Salle’s educational vision and influence,and Buttimer II studies the Founder’s spiritual vision and influence. Participation in the Buttimer Institute involves a three-year commitment to complete the program.

The Saint Teresa Leadership and Service Institute for Women and the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota are sponsoring a Walk for Thought fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 6, at Lake Winona.
The sixth annual Walk for Thought raises public awareness about brain injury and funding to support those affected by brain injury. Each year more than 20,000 Minnesotans sustain a traumatic brain injury from events such as motor vehicle crashes, falls and firearms — six times more than the combined annual number of people who will experience HIV/AIDS, breast cancer and multiple sclerosis. Despite this startling statistic, awareness about the causes and residual effects of brain injury remain low.

In 2007, the Walk for Thought will be at two other locations besides Winona, Canal Park in Duluth and Como Park in St. Paul. This marks the second time the walk has been held in Winona.
Registration and check-in for the Winona walk starts at 9 a.m. at the walk tent in the Kmart parking lot. The walk will begin at 10 a.m. To register online or for more information, go to www.braininjurymn.org.
Last year more than 1,000 participants and sponsors raised nearly $80,000 for the cause — and this year the goal is to raise a record-breaking $100,000 for the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota.
“While our goal is to continue raising awareness, this year’s walk is of acute importance as one of our young students sustained a brain injury in an accident just weeks before school started,” said Holly Richard, director of the Saint Teresa Institute. “When intangible statistics become real within a small community, people take action. Brain injuries are very real, and we hope to get more people involved to support the work of the Brain Injury Association.”
Valerie Edwards Robeson, Department of Social Science and Richard Tristano, Department of History, represented the Winona campus at the first annual International Lasallian University Leadership Program. The meeting took place at the Generalate of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Rome, Italy from June 10-23. The program goal was a deeper understanding of Lasallian Partnership and featured a variety of speakers and various community building activities. Participants developed a plan for engaging their home campuses in a deeper understanding of their Lasallian identity.
Saint Mary’s Univrsity is hosting the Above and Beyond Awards Reception Wednesday, May 9, at the Alverna Center, located on the Saint Teresa campus. Other program sponsors are the Winona Daily News, Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical and Winona State University.

The evening begins at 6:30 p.m., with presentation of awards and scholarships scheduled for 7 p.m. Invited are the nine area Above & Beyond high school winners, their families and high school officials, along with representatives from the community sponsors. Award winners typically have inspiring stories about overcoming obstacles.
Current SMU senior Justin Simmons, who is deaf and will graduate this spring, is the featured speaker.
A contingent of Winona community members and students are traveling to Winona’s sister city, Misato, Japan, April 16-23.
Traveling to the East are 25 Winona middle and senior high school students, along with their parent/chaperones and WSHS assistant principal Kelly Sonsalla. Also attending are Winona City Councilman Tim Breza and WSHS parent Terrie Lueck, SMU director of conferencing and camps.

Lueck will post live daily updates on a “Messages from Misato” website, located at www.smumn.edu/japan. Each day she will make a long distance call from Japan to Winona and leave messages, which can be heard on your computer or MP3 player. Also on the site are links to more information about Misato.
A group if Misato delegates visited Winona in March. The group was hosted by SMU, where they participated in a fun night filled with swimming, ice skating and basketball. They also visited the Minnesota Marine Art Museum and went to a Timberwolves game.

Holly Richard, director of the Saint Teresa Leadership and Service Institute for Women, will present “Heed Her Cry: The Paradox of Ecofeminism in Contemporary American Literature” Thursday, April 26, at Saint Mary’s University.

Saint Mary’s, along with Merchants Bank, Barb and William Schuler, Junto Club and many other supporters, will host the Laws of Life Essay Contest Awards Banquet on Wednesday, April 18, at the Hiawatha Room, located on the Saint Teresa campus. This essay contest showcases the work of Cotter and Winona Senior High School ninth through 12th-graders. Students write about their moral ideals in this contest. Winners are awarded U.S. Bonds, cash and scholarships totaling more than $28,000.
This year’s final Winona Youth Leadership activity and luncheon is set for Tuesday, April 10, in the Toner Student Center. Youth Leadership partners include Saint Mary’s, the Winona Daily News, Winona State, the United Way, Winona Health and the Winona Area Chamber of Commerce. Saint Mary’s will host 18 juniors from four area high schools, and challenge them with fun activities that relate to college life and making smart choices. Brother Chancellor Louis DeThomasis will give a luncheon talk about ethical decision making.
Students are encouraged to join their peers as they meet legislators and lobby for the Minnesota State Grant Program on Thursday, April 12. A free breakfast and lunch will be served on the bus. The event is sponsored by Student Senate.
The first Saint Mary's Heart and SOUL Row, Ride and Run Triathlon will be held Sunday, April 29. The race will start at Lake Lodge, on East Lake in Winona, and will finish on the SMU campus.
Participants will row 2 miles, bike 14 miles and run 3.2 miles. The cost is $25 for individuals or $50 for teams of three or four, if you register by today. A drawing for prizes will take place at the finish. For kayak and canoe rental information, contact the Office of Campus Ministry at Ext. 1643.
