Saint Mary’s invites public to Relay for Life April 12-13

The Saint Mary’s Colleges Against Cancer group invites the community to its 2014 Relay for Life — to be held 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13, in Gostomski Fieldhouse.

Teams comprised of friends, families and co-workers will join together for this fundraising effort, which celebrates people who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and provides an opportunity to fight back against the disease.

Team members will spend the night walking around SMU’s indoor track from dusk to dawn to represent the 24-hour fight against cancer. Last year more than 150 people participated in the event which raised more than $10,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year’s movie theme is “Strike cancer from the script.”

Activities are planned throughout the night including a silent auction, student performances, a newlywed game, late-night Zumba and a chance to win a Fitbit.

If you are thinking about creating a team; if you would like to come and support the American Cancer Society’s efforts; if you would like to celebrate cancer survivors and remember those you have lost; or if you would like to be recognized as a survivor and have your success celebrated — come to this event. Participants are welcome to stay for as much or as little as their schedules allow.

Saint Mary’s Relay for Life raises more than $17,500

On March 15-16, the Saint Mary’s community participated in the Relay for Life. More than 175 students, faculty and staff came together to celebrate and remember those who have defeated cancer, those currently battling cancer, and those who have lost their lives to this disease. A record 22 cancer survivors were in attendance. The event raised more than $17,500 for the American Cancer Society and donations are still coming in. Team members spent the night walking around SMU’s indoor track from dusk to dawn to represent the 24-hour fight against cancer.

The staff Relay for Life Team, “Team Eddie,” would like to thank the SMU community for its support. Thank you to everyone who participated in the “sweetheart” auction, bought a muffin, decorated a luminary, made a donation, walked the track or prayed for or with the team.  For the first time, this team took first place in fundraising for this event, raising $2,537.

The event brought students, faculty, staff, and community members together for a great cause.

Buy a basket to benefit Relay for Life team

The staff and faculty Relay for Life team will kick off this year’s rally with a small silent auction Feb. 12-13 in the Business Office.  All baskets will contain some “heart-related” items, making them perfect Valentine gifts for a loved one in your life. Surprise your favorite someone!

Luminaries can also be purchased and decorated at this time in memory of a loved one lost or in honor of a survivor. All money raised will go to the American Cancer Society.

Faculty, staff issued Relay challenge

Laurie Haase, Business Office, is putting together a faculty/staff team for “Relay for Life.” Anyone who would like to join her team, “Team Eddie,” should contact her or go to www.relayforlife.org/smu.

If you cannot participate by joining a team, donations are also welcome; contact Haase at Ext. 1464 or the team of your choice. Additionally, anyone can purchase luminaries in honor of or in memory of someone for $10 (or 3 for $25). Luminaries are placed around the track in the Fieldhouse and are lit throughout the evening.

The evening is filled with fun activities, and teams sell unique items as fundraisers. The SMU community is invited to stop by to shop or to enjoy the event.

All those within in the Winona community who have survived cancer, or who have extended family and friends that are survivors are invited to participate in the Victory Lap in the RAC. This lap is a moment to recognize those attending survivors while they take the first lap of the night. This lap sets the tone for the night, focusing on a celebration of courage while motivating walking participants.

There will also be a special survivors’ reception in honor of all those survivors attending the event.

The SMU Staff and Friends Relay for Life team would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s event. Join SMU staff and friends Relay for Life team

Well everyone, it’s a GO! An SMU staff and friends Relay for Life team has been formed. The “relay” will be held in the RAC from 4 p.m. Friday, April 9, to 7 a.m. Saturday, April 10.

Please go www.relayforlife.org/smu to sign up as soon as possible, so organizers have an idea of how many people will be part of the team.

Laurie Haase has packets for everyone so let her know as you sign up. The goal is to have someone from the team on the track the entire time. Each individual is asked to raise at least $100. If you cannot not raise the entire amount and/or cannot stay the entire time, it’s okay. This is a great opportunity to raise money to fight cancer and to have quality interaction time with students.
