Thank you to all the first semester Chat, Chow, & Web 2.0 presenters: Moni Berg-Binder (Biology), Karen Hemker (Disability Services), Lori Charron (Communication), Michael Ratajczyk (Business), Kristen Sellke (Math), and Demian Cho (Physics). They helped attract a consistent audience which also produced the highest attendance for a single semester.

The Chat and Chow session coordinators would like to encourage participation during the upcoming spring semester. They will talk about how they can now move easily through their classrooms carrying their technology with them.

Thank you to everyone who presented as part of the Chat, Chow, & Web 2.0 series this year for spreading ideas, building community, and reflecting on the role of technology in our daily lives. Topics this year included: teaching online courses, accessibility and technology considerations, Blackboard enhancements, SMU technology updates, e-portfolios in action, flipgrid, poll everywhere, Google docs, and blended learning through flipped instruction.  The willingness of presenters to share their successes and struggles is greatly admired by many.

With great appreciation, a thank you also goes out to Chartwells for the food arrangement and delivery, Casey Ingvalson and Donny Cisewski for presentation support and setup, as well as to the students and library staff who willingly allowed use of the McEnery Center every month. “You Gotta Get Up and Try, Try, Try!” will include presentations by Nathan Lien (Chemistry) who has been trying out a flipped classroom technique, and Rose Beal (Theology) who is trying to use  Google Docs as a replacement for the ubiquitous Power Point.  Find out how it has been working for them and how it might also work for you.

Blackboard 9.1 is almost here

Take a minute to read the “Bb 9.1 Coming Soon” tab in Blackboard. It’s the best way to stay informed on the changes ahead.

IMPORTANT: If you wish to have a course from 2008M3 (Summer 2009) or earlier copied to the new Bb system, you must request it. To request a course that is from before 2008M3, please send an e-mail indicating the complete course ID(s) and your name to Edtech@smumn.edu.

The Blackboard system will not be available during the weekend of July 1-4.

Next Chat, Chow & Web 2.0 is March 17

The next Chat, Chow & Web 2.0 will be held Wednesday, March 17, in the main lounge of the McEnery Center. The event will examine “E-portfolios: Ere Their Story Die” between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. A portfolio has been described as a “collection of a student’s work specifically selected to tell a particular story about the student.” Do your students have the technological tools to create portfolios for the 21st century? Discover what your colleagues are doing to meet this challenge. The event is sponsored by the Fitz, IT and Instructional Technology. A welcome back session highlighting new technologies for the new semester, “Where's my G-drive?!!,” “What's Camio?” and “Tegrity meets Facebook,” will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, in McEnery Lounge.

Admission to host Field of Dreams open house

The Office of Admission will host Preview Day 2007 on Saturday, April 28.

Preview Day is an open house for high school juniors interested in attending college. This year, high school seniors who have applied to SMU but have not visited campus are also invited.

This year’s Preview Day is called “Field of Dreams,” and families are invited to watch the home baseball and softball games that afternoon.

Families will be arriving around 10 a.m. and have a schedule set until 1:30 p.m. All departments and offices are invited to have a booth during the open house from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the gymnasium. It will be run similarly to the Campus Resource Fair during New Student Orientation.

Nienaber presents on the use of Tegrity*

Father Paul Nienaber, Ph.D., assistant professor and chair of the Department of Physics, discussed Tegrity in the presentation, “Latest and Greatest or Just Latest? Pedagogical Technology in the Physics Classroom” on April 28 at the spring meeting of the Minnesota section of the American Association of Physics Teachers at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn.

Kjorlien co-writes article about Tegrity*

Chad Kjorlien, director of instructional technology, co-wrote a Tegrity bulletin, “Mobile Learning Technology: Aligning Mission with Motivation,” that was published through Educause Center for Applied Research on April 10. The ECAR research bulletin was announced to more than 10,000 individuals at more than 400 higher education institutions.

Chad Kjorlien, director of instructional technology, wrote an article for the TLT (Teaching, Learning and Technology) Group titled “Evaluation of a Pilot Test of a new Technology for Faculty” in F-Light.
